OK, we are in the final stages of deciding - at least we have decided to build so we can get exactly what we want. We love all the amenities in SJP but like the close proximity to the beach on OKI. Our daughter and grandkids were here this week and it seems the beach club would be nice for showering and not having so much hassle with sand and all to get home. Then tonight we made a last minute decision to get ice cream after dinner and were there in a couple minutes - definitely won't happen in SJP.
Would like thoughts of people in both places about coming to the beach - how long can you use the facilities at the beach club after the pool is closed down? We decided not to move to Ocean Ridge because we prefer OKI to Sunset Beach but I recall our sales person saying you could go to the beach club any time of the day or night all year long. SJP?
Just an FYI... actually it IS in Southport.... St James is an incorporated town within Southport... our address is Southport, NC.
Not true. The post office assigns "Southport" addresses for an area that extends well beyond the city limits of Southport and includes Boiling Spring Lakes, Bald Head Island, St. James, etc. This is due to the fact that none of those other towns have a post office. All of them may have a "Southport" mailing address (assigned by the post office), but none are inside the city limits of Southport, and thus are not "in" Southport.
Its not possible to have an incorporated town within another incorporated town in NC.

Makes no difference whatsoever.... everything that is delivered here is delivered to Southport.... as far as we are concerned we are in Southport.... their GPS direcst them to Southport...... but that's just us.
OMG... you can use the beach anytime you want... parking lot open all year... the BUILDING's Bathroom ( entry through a key pad code ) closes down sometime after Labor Day ( don't know exactly when, they drain the water in case of a freeze during the winter months ) but they leave the port a potties there under the Building all the time.

Nonetheless, St. James is NOT in, nor part of, Southport. Anymore so than Bald Head or BSL is in Southport. How the post office is organized has nothing to do with it. Nor does ones opinion. It's not a matter of whether one considers it. Don't be ashamed of living in St. James.
If you were in Southport, you'd pay Southport taxes, which you don't. But if you'd like to send the town a check, feel free to do so!

As most answers .. this one begins with ... Depends.
You simply will not get the amenities SJP offers if you build on OKI. If you build in SJP you loose the benefits of many other retailers that will be closer on OKI.
A lot DEPENDS on where you build on OKI. You may or many not be just a minute or two from said retailers.
In SJP a new gate is in the works that will literally be just a couple of minutes from the new bridge going into OKI. In conjunction with that new gate is a new section of SJP that will be adjacent to the gate. This new section has nearly 50 lots, several of which are already sold. If you built in this new section you would be in SJP and also be minutes from OKI.
