We're visiting Wilmington this weekend to look at homes. I'm interested in a safe location that also has lots of walkable areas nearby (schools, parks, restaurants, etc). The city itself seems too crime-ridden for us. Our home budget is 200K or less. What other options are there? TIA!
what does your agent tell you when you ask for suburban neighborhoods in the 200K range?
Do you need to commute to downtown Wilmington? How far will you commute? Brunswick County, just south of Wilmington, has a lot of residential growth, including large neighborhoods with amenities and shopping centers at the entrance.
And I suppose you've already visited and spent time in the "city itself" to develop this opinion that it is "crime-ridden"?

There are very few walkable locations in the suburbs. Hampstead is built out along Market Street where you drive between shopping centers.
If you want walkable, I think your best bet is to look within the older neighborhoods of Wilmington like Ogden and Pine Valley. They are very safe, and certainly not "crime-ridden".
You're moving from Pittsburgh, which has a higher violent crime rate than Wilmington. You haven't ever been to Wilmington, have you? Wilmington is a very suburban town, there isn't much of an identifiable urban center. There is a downtown with lots of bars and restaurants and funky little shops, and it's where the court house is, along with the associated lawyers' offices and government entities. That and the ever-expanding community college make up the bulk of the downtown. The business area(s) of Wilmington are scattered all over the place, with no rhyme nor reason to them. Oleander Dr, Market St, and College Rd and areas between them are where most shopping is done. Look at a map of Wilmington.
There are many safe neighborhoods in Wilmington with houses in your price range - Lincoln Forest, Pine Valley, Winter Park, Myrtle Grove, some older neighborhoods off Greenville Loop Rd, Masonboro Loop Rd. "Walkability" is subjective, what I consider walkability and what you do may be very different. Just watch out for the snakes.
It ties the City Parks together and leads all the way to Wrightsville Beach. More connections are planned, like in the Audobon area near Empie Park.
