Hello everyone,

My husband is applying for a job at Camp Lejune. Even if he does not get it, this seems like an area to keep in mind if further positions open up. I'm hoping someone can answer a few questions....

1) What is the climate and bug situation like? I'm guessing quite hot and humid, but do you still get much snow? How about tornadoes, severe hurricanes, etc...? My 2 phobias are bugs and tornadoes, so I've always avoided the thought of coming too far south, but I'm hoping you aren't on par with Florida as far as bugs and severe storms?

2) It will be my husband, my 18 year old dd, and myself moving, so we definitely don't need a mansion, but would like a somewhat newer home (we have an old one now that has nickel and dimed us for the past 16 years) with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Our max budget would be around 200k. Are there nice, SAFE areas within a 30 min max commute to Camp Lejune that would offer this price for housing?

3) I currently work in the front office of a medical clinic and am also looking to get into the human resource field. My dd will be starting out in a community college. Are there jobs and schools in this area?

Any other info you can offer would be fantastic! Would you recommend this area? Thanks!

I think that the Jacksonville area offers good job options. The housing is reasonable in cost, but there are a few caveats:

1. The summer climate is hot and humid. There are mosquitoes, especially if you live near water. You can get the yard sprayed to keep them in control. We also have fire ants, but they are contollable. I have *never* seen a cockroach or palmetto bug, and I don't think they are a major problem.

2. There have been occasional tornadoes, and one damaged the roof of a school. However, they are nowhere near as bad as the midwest. I suggest getting yourself a weather radio, and identify where you could shelter yourself in the house.

3. The area has had hurricane damage. The most recent was in 2011, and it blew down many tree limbs. You just need to have a plan to deal with a hurricanes, and evacuate if necessary.

4. There is occasional snow in the winter, an inch or two every few years. The schools were closed a couple of days because of ice on the roads.

Regarding your other questions. Absolutely, yes, there are three bedroom homes in Jacksonville for under $200K. And yes, the city is a safe place to live. If you prefer the country, Richlands, Sneads Ferry, Hubert and Swansboro are also good.

The Coastal Carolina Community College is on the main road in Jacksonville. It is a decent school with medical, IT, and trades education as well as academic courses.

The wife could probably find work in a medical office or at the hospital. The area is growing, and there is a lot of job turnover as military spouses move on.

Thanks! We definitely don't want to live right in the city. We looked at some houses online last night, and I can't believe how much you get for your money!
