Define "cheap as possible". Maybe look at Hampstead.

It sounds like a problem if the wife does not want to be close to the beach and you do.

Regardless, I suggest looking at inland locations in Holly Ridge, Surf City or further inland somewhere like Maple Hill, Watha, Burgaw or Rocky Point. Use Realtor.com or Militarybyowner.com as well as Craigslist. Also look at local realtor's websites.

For example, there are Maple Hill listings on Realtor at $800 for a mobile home and $825-1200 for 3br houses.

If a house is cheaper than $800/month you will have to look at mobile homes or run-down places. Otherwise, you may have to compromise on the distance to the beach and be further away. Try Wallace, Beulaville or Richlands for places that are safe.

Lots of Wilmington posts showing up in the General NC forum lately...?--the Coastal NC forum will have more targeted info for you--this is really for statewide topics or areas that don't fit into a geographic subforum.

Also, it is not advised for you to put your email openly in a post (opens you up to spammers, etc)--ask people to Private-Message you.

Look through these, avoid downtown/central Wilmington. Sunset Park might be okay, it's hit-or-miss there. Holly Ridge, Castle Hayne, Rocky Point, Burgaw, Hampstead, Leland are all possibilities, but the only way to tell for sure what sort of neighborhood it's in is to go to the physical location and look around.
