Beginning mid-October part of US 17 Business in Washington will be closed to through traffic for 18 months as the downtown bridge will be undergoing major repairs while still open for driving, and the bridge over the RR tracks adjacent to Whichard's Beach Rd will be completely replaced, therefore closed.
BOLIVIA – Emergency girder work has closed a bridge on N.C. 906 (Midway Road) over Middle Swamp, less than a mile south of its intersection with U.S. 17 Business in Bolivia.
The N.C. Department of Transportation inspects all its bridges at least once every two years to determine whether they need maintenance or repairs. After inspecting this bridge, it was determined girder work was needed to ensure it remains safe.
The closure went into place this afternoon and is expected to last through Tuesday evening, June 11.
A detour uses N.C. 211 and U.S. 17 to get around the closure. Drivers need to pay extra attention to detour signs and to anticipate perhaps needing extra travel time.
ELIZABETHTOWN – The threat of future floodwaters closing N.C. 210 in Bladen County will be diminished, thanks to a series of major culvert upgrades that will wind down this summer.
On June 17, a section of N.C. 210 is scheduled to close about a mile south of U.S. 701 northeast of Elizabethtown. An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will install a double-barreled, box-shaped culvert under the road where the highway crosses Smith Mill Pond Run. The nearest intersection is with Walter K. Evans Road.
The drainage pipe under N.C. 210 blew out during Hurricanes Matthew and Florence. The new culvert will be larger and capable of handling more floodwater capacity without incurring any road damage.
“The roadway and drainage pipe at this location suffered major damage during both hurricanes,” said Ken Clark, the NCDOT district engineer for Bladen and Columbus counties. “Following both storms, our crews worked tirelessly to restore access to the area. So, this major culvert upgrade is critical, and it will help prevent this road from washing out again.”
The detour will keep drivers on these two primary routes: N.C. 41 and U.S. 701. The road is expected to reopen by mid-August before school starts.
In early July, another section of N.C. 210 will close about a half mile south of Moore’s Swamp Road near the Black River, where crews will upgrade the drainage pipe. The existing pipe was damaged by Florence and needs to be replaced. The closure will last about two weeks. The detour will be posted on DriveNC.gov under the Bladen County list of closures.
These two projects will follow work completed on June 7 installing two larger culverts under N.C. 210 north of Green Sea Road that also washed out during the hurricanes.
HAVELOCK – Additional work and lane closures are needed next week so a contractor can continue to set girders over the eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 into Slocum Gate at the MCAS Cherry Point military base. Similar closures have been in place overnight this week.
The lane closures are planned for 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. for four consecutive nights, June 17-20. The work is weather conditional.
The left eastbound lane will be closed just past the intersection of Hickman Hill Loop Road. The remaining lane for eastbound traffic will be shifted to get around the work area. The left westbound lane will be closed at the Walmart intersection. The remaining right westbound lane will continue thru the work zone. Once past the work area, the highway will return to its normal traffic patterns.
Because of the work, the Slocum Gate will be closed from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night.
Drivers are reminded to slow down when approaching the work zone, and to pay extra attention when going through the location.
The girder work is part of a $24.4 million project to build a new overpass to allow traffic to go directly into the Slocum Gate entrance for the base.
