TABOR CITY – A section of U.S. 701 north of Tabor City will close next week to allow N.C. Department of Transportation crews to replace and upsize a drainage pipe underneath the roadway.

The work is scheduled to begin Monday, July 29, closing the highway in both directions between Vinegar Loop and Sidney-Cherry Grove roads. Local traffic will continue to have access, but the road will be closed where the pipe is being replaced near South Columbus High School.

The upgrade will lessen the risk of water pooling along the highway and repair a bump in the roadway caused by a failing pipe.

A signed detour will send drivers onto Peacock Road and Minos Meares Road. Drivers should plan for additional travel time to reach their destinations and be alert when approaching the work zone.

U.S. 701 is scheduled to reopen by Aug. 9, which is before the public schools return to class.

WILSON – About 340 miles of roadway in Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Wayne and Wilson counties will be restriped this year with more durable and visible road markings.

Performance Sealing & Striping Inc. of Jacksonville will refresh the pavement markings in these five counties, which are part of the N. Department of Transportation’s Highway Division 4, headquartered in Wilson. NCDOT awarded the $3.3 million contract last week.

The contractor will use thermoplastic pavement marking, which is more durable than regular pavement paint and also better reflects headlights. The thermoplastic markings will last about three times longer than regular roadway striping, depending on traffic volumes, weather and other conditions.

“This kind of enhanced pavement marking material will be more visible at night when people are driving, and it will lower the risk of crashes,” said Andy Brown, the Division 4 traffic engineer.

The work is scheduled to take place roughly between September and December.

The affected routes include U.S. 13, U.S. 70 Business, U.S. 117, U.S. 158 and U.S. 301, plus 48 secondary roads. Here is a mileage breakdown by county:

Edgecombe: 52
Halifax: 64
Nash: 81
Wayne: 118
Wilson: 25

LELAND – N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews will close a portion of Old Fayetteville Road in Brunswick County for two days next week.

Construction will take place from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Wednesday, Aug. 7. Old Fayetteville Road will be closed between the northeast ends of Ricefield Branch Street and Highland Hills Drive while crews do preservation work on the bridge over Sturgeon Creek. The Leland road will be reopened at the end of the workday.

Detour signs will direct traffic onto Old Fayetteville Road, Lanvale Road and Village Road.

Traffic flow on the route is not expected to be heavily affected by roadwork, however drivers should be prepared for slower travel and remain alert for work crews.

Quote:
DUNN – Pope Road, which crosses Interstate 95 at exit 72 in Harnett County, will be restricted to one travel lane beginning today and lasting several weeks until the bridge can be repaired.

Inspectors with the N.C. Department of Transportation closed the right southbound lane for about two hours on Wednesday morning to examine the minor damage to two of the four steel beams. Damage indicates that an unknown vehicle with a load too high for the legal limits struck the bridge while traveling on I-95.

NCDOT engineers deemed the bridge safe to reopen Interstate 95. But as a precaution, the department will restrict traffic on the overpass via an automated traffic signal, which will allow drivers to take turns using one lane.

This temporary pattern will remain in place on Pope Road for about a month until materials and a company that specializes in steel beam repairs around the United States can repair the damage.
