GOLDSBORO – A bridge on North Beston Road east of Goldsboro is scheduled to close Monday morning to allow contract crews to begin replacing it.

The contractor will demolish the 66-year-old bridge over Bear Creek and build a new bridge. Drivers will be detoured onto New Hope Road, Hope Road, Mark Edwards Road and Parkstown Road.

The road is scheduled to reopen with the new bridge by the end of December.

The existing structure is functionally obsolete, which means it no longer meets the demands of the traffic using it. And while safe, it has become structurally deficient, requiring more frequent maintenance.

United Contractors Inc. of Iowa will do the work under a contract of about $800,000 awarded last year by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

LELAND – N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews will close a portion of Old Fayetteville Road in Brunswick County for two days next week.

Construction will take place from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, through Thursday afternoon. Old Fayetteville Road will be closed between the northeast ends of Ricefield Branch Street and Highland Hills Drive while crews do preservation work on the bridge over Sturgeon Creek. The Leland road will be reopened at the end of the workday.

Detour signs will direct traffic onto Old Fayetteville Road, Lanvale Road and Village Road.

Traffic flow on the route is not expected to be heavily affected by roadwork, however drivers should be prepared for slower travel and remain alert for work crews.

PINK HILL – N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews plan to close a Lenoir County road for about two weeks to replace a pipe.

A section of the northbound side of Eric Sparrow Road, near Davis Mill Road, will be closed to allow crews to safely replace a pipe damaged during Hurricane Florence with a larger culvert. The upgraded pipe will prevent future flooding of the highway.

Construction is expected to begin by 8 a.m. Aug. 19 and end by 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

Detour signs will direct drivers to use Eric Sparrow Road, Gray Branch Church Road, N.C. 11 and Liddell Road.

Traffic should only be mildly affected, and drivers should use caution while using detour routes.

BRIDGETON – N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close a portion of U.S. 17 in both directions in Craven County next week to perform maintenance at a railroad crossing.

NCDOT will close the road Aug. 16 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to allow a contractor to safely repave and replace concrete panels for the tracks at the crossing near B Street.

Traffic is expected to be heavily impacted during the workday. Drivers will be redirected to Weyerhauser Road, U.S. 70 West, and the U.S. 17 Bypass.

Drivers should remain alert for detour signs and plan for delays to their regular commute.

Friend of mine near Kinston is asking when/if the US-70 bypass around Kinston will be finalized. Apparently the route has been evaluated for years. Any insight?

According to the project page, NCDOT is supposed to pick their preferred alternative this winter. Public meetings to discuss the alternatives are being held this month.

NCDOT has put the brakes on the proposed Cape Fear Crossing project in Wilmington since it did not score well enough in the draft 2020-2029 STIP to receive funding.

SELMA – Drivers who use U.S. 70 at Ricks Road in Selma will encounter delays on Wednesday and Thursday.

As part of the widening of Ricks Road, an N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will mill away the old pavement in the intersection and along Ricks Road, starting Wednesday morning. The work will require temporary lane closures.

The contractor plans to add new pavement and permanent lane markings after the milling work is completed.

In addition, the contractor will install metal mast arms to replace the wires holding traffic signals at the intersection. Vertical poles that will hold the metal arms have been installed. On Thursday at 5 a.m., the contractor will close the intersection for about 20 minutes to erect the metal arms that will stretch over the roadway. Law enforcement will control traffic until the metal arms are installed and the intersection can be reopened.

The signal upgrade cannot be done in the rain, so inclement weather may require the contractor to postpone the work to the same time on Friday morning.

The department awarded a $3.6 million contract last year to add a middle turn lane to the length of the two-lane road, and to construct curbs and gutters and improve the road’s drainage system. The project is on schedule to be completed next month.
