The Southport newspaper has an article about a new shopping center being developed on Oak Island. The developer is quoted a saying the center will be anchored by a Florida-based grocery store. Sounds like Publix to me. They certainly will give Lowe's a run for their money in this area.

Where in Oak Island would this shopping center locate?

Most new Publix stores I am noticing are either 45,600 or 49,098 square feet in size and may have pharmacy drive thru service.

Publix would definitely create competition for Lowe's Foods and Food Lion in Brunswick County.

I think it will be the southeast corner of East Oak Island Drive and Southeast 50th Street. If it is using the single block bordered by Southeast 51st Street and Southeast Pelican Drive, Publix could use its smallest size store at approximately 29,000 square feet. If the store and shopping center will be larger in size, development can stretch another block to Southeast 52nd Street.

Publix seems a long shot to me. But times are achangin'.

Historically PUBLIX has gone after markets with young, professional, two income families. That is about as far from Oak Island as you can get. (Not a hater, used to live there, still own property there!)

However, the recent move to New Bern with a 49K store (the concrete walls are now partially up) seems to buck that trend, so maybe.

Good luck!

Publix locates in established and newly established trade areas. Oak Island is an established trade area.

A Publix in Oak Island would create competition for Food Lion #2114, 5901 East Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, North Carolina 28465-5042.

I am reading the proposed agenda (2016-01-12) for Oak Island Town Council's public hearing and regular meeting. Would this be a public hearing or a presentation?
