Oak Island Marketplace is 37,000 square feet retail center planned on East Oak Island Drive between Southeast 50th Street and Southeast 52nd Street in the Town of Oak Island, North Carolina. The development would be anchored by a 30,000 square feet Publix supermarket.
Oak Island Town Council sent the development plans to the Oak Island Planning Board for approval.
Preliminary site plans for Oak Island Marketplace has the proposed 28,800-square-foot Publix supermarket accompanied by 7,000 square feet of adjacent retail. It appears Publix may not have a drive thru for its pharmacy at this store.
I'm a bit sad that a KOA or a private campground didn't pick up on that location. I think a nice well run campground is a great way to introduce people to the island.
My wife and I camp alot and always explore the area we stay at, enjoying the sites, restaurants and people. And most campers do the same.
This is the site plan they showed at the meeting in January. Thanks for the link.
The layout of the proposed Publix is different from its 28m prototype stores that have opened. The entry and exit are centered in the front instead of at a corner. The pharmacy would be at the AB, or left front, corner of the store. It is possible a pharmacy drive thru could be included.
Could St. James Plantation and Southport support an additional Publix?
I don' think so. There a new Lowe's about to open in the St. James/Oak Island area, and the existing Lowe's located between St. James and Southport is going to move to a new location nearby. Plus the Food Lion in that same area just moved into a new store. Thats 2 Lowe's, 2 Food Lions and a Publix all within a 5 mile radius, 4 of which are brand new facilities. I can't see another store in that area.
Could St. James Plantation and Southport support an additional Publix?
I doubt it. Not with competition from the new 'flagship' Lowes Foods opening next month that's much closer to SJP, Winding River & Riversea. OKI is more of a Food Lion kinda place in the off-season.
