I am getting ready to move to the Wilmington area and will be working in Bolivia. The potential apartment I'm looking at is in the Hawthorne Centre North area. Can anyone tell me if this is a doable commute. I've heard I will be going against traffic which should help and have been told the commute time will be 30 minutes. Can any of you locals tell me if this is accurate and if the Hawthorne area is safe. Thank you for any and all information, am looking forward to getting there.

Its doable in 30 minutes. Sometimes it may take you 45. The biggest problem you have is the potential backups at the Isabel Holmes bridge...even after the widening of the Causeway is complete, it still hasn't addressed the issue of the traffic light on the other side of Holmes bridge and I-140 traffic (like Brunswick Co beaches/Myrtle Beach traffic) is still using the Causeway and that light to connect.

The Causeway is still under construction until the end of 2016.

That traffic will lighten up some once the I-140 bypass is complete, either fall of 2017 or spring 2018. After that, you could theoretically go up College Rd and I-40 and use the I-140 bypass and bypass downtown and Leland entirely, which would probably be an easy 30 minute trip because of the limited access interstate road.
