Hey folks. I'm looking to move with my family, from Atlanta, to New Bern, NC. We are a young couple with a daughter, 6, and we're wondering how adjustable it would be from the ATL city life. Never visited. But we are in the process of being sent there to take leadership of a ministry. I have a few specific questions. How receptive is the city to the "African-American presence"? Is there a large African-American demographic? Color aside now. What's the fun stuff to do? Are there a large variety of restaurants and family social settings?
You can Google "new bern demographics" and get information on the racial makeup...its about a third african american. As Flamingo suggested, there are many existing threads on this board you can search for and read through. NB has its challenges. It also has a lot of tourism, so there are a lot of restaurants, its close to beach, etc.
There is a significant African American presence. I don't think anyone would even think to ask that question who lives here.
The Chief of Police is a black guy, and about 1/2 the Board of Aldermen are as well.
New Bern is still a small town, and for its size, it has great restaurants, and a lot to do, mostly focused on the two large rivers and its proximity to the coast. There is also a very vibrant arts scene, again, for a city its size. Art walks are pretty frequent, as well as other artsy stuff.
