this isn't about "yankees" moving "to the area". my friends are from all over the country, including the north.

this is about a group of older baby boomers moving from certain parts of the NYC area to a little gated enclave, and together behaving in a questionable and adversarial fashion that causes problems for the people around them. St. James is not the only one. St. James just happens to be a particularly egregious example.

Ok ladies and germs..... I'm afraid I am a total loss on this one..... my head is spinning, I may have to just give up and seek therapy now !

It seems that not only the utter hypocrisy of the " born and raised there " statement by Leroy is now of no consequence..... now we are subjected to the ridiculously predjudicial and nonsensical statement that not only all of those dastardly people ( that happen to be of a certain age group and from a certain part of the NYC area ??? ) that move to these gated communities are acting in "questionable and adversarial fashions" ( whatever that means ) which cause "problems" ( whatever that means ) for the people around them ???

I'm sorry guys and gals, and maybe I'm wrong, but if that isn't the height of idiocy, ignorance, hypocrisy and sterotyping... I don't know what is !

But.... and you knew there was a but..... now we truly are faced with an obvious dilemma... do we cancel our plans to visit Southport / St James next week ?? Do we want to be a part of those invading folks that act so questionably/adversarially and cause more "problems" for the people around the area, with the St James folks being particularly "egregious" ?? We're just looking for a place to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors. Apparantly, according to my best bud Leroy who has poked his head out of that single wide deep in the piney woods, this is an impossiblity. We don't want to beat our heads against a brick wall and force our presence on people that don't want us there.

I must admit that I am somewhat confused though.... of all the people that we have spoken with from the Southport area and St James, I was under the impression that they were all living together without any catastrophic consequences for the past 15 yrs or so. Now we hear from Leroy that ain't so... and that we will be causing even more strife by even thinking of moving there..... and especially the move to St James which would be particularly "egregious" ( must admit I had to look that one up ) !

OK, so what to do.... what to do..... cancel the trip ?.... or go down there and get eggs thrown at us by the very people that are having these egregious "problems" ( again, whatever that means ) thrust upon them ?? Any suggestions would be appreciated !

Yes Senor Canals..... "perhaps" you are correct. If we were to take a deep breath and maybe a shot or two of some liquid courage ( the 12 yr old variety ) before we arrive we may actually do some good by going down there and exhibiting exemplary behavior we could perhaps overcome some of the egredious adversarial and questionable behavior by our predecessors that is causing the indiginous personel such terrible problems( at least the personel that were born and raised there, which would of course, necessarily exclude that bastion of tolerance and common courtesy.... Leeroy ).

Then again, do we want to take that chance, I understand dried egg is simply hell to get off the paint of a rental car.

Roi boy

To be honest with you, St James Plantation is probably 1 out of 100 communities in the Carolinas where people from the Northeast retire. I will go back to my other earlier point, something must have happened with a few people from "Joisey" that has turned you against people from here. Work with us, what happened??
Remember, in the next 5 years it is estimated that 3-400,000 Baby boomers from the "frigid North" will be retiring down there. We be a coming my friend!!!

Try to not stereotype all of us as obnoxious you know whats.

Peace be with you my friend

NEW! Winter Shotguns and Chelsea Requests
Beginning Monday, January 3rd, a 10am shotgun start
will be in effect for all 4 golf courses. The
shotguns will run Monday - Saturday with regular
tee times on Sundays, starting at 9am. Monday -
Saturday, The Members Club will have afternoon tee
times available starting at 12:30pm. This program
will run until the last week in February.
Chelsea regular and recurring requests can be made
for the shotguns. Please enter 10am as your
requested time. Since there are less tee times
available, we are expecting a standby list on
certain days. In fairness to your fellow members,
please call the golf shops before 9am on your play
date to cancel your tee time so that the golf staff
can contact players on the standby list and enter
them in the shotgun. No penalty points will be
assigned for canceling before 9am, however
canceling later than 9am will result in two points.
No-shows will also receive two points.

Please note: Signature Golf Coupons may be used at

Alright, as we are indeed worried now that Leeroy is correct and we will be shunned by the town folk in Southport..... we called some of the restaurants there including Josephs Italian at the Southport Marina and asked what their policy is regarding alowing paying customers of older baby boomer age from the NYC area to dine at their establishment..... they were very nice and said we could eat there..... but there would be a 20% upcharge .... sort of like a corking fee !

Stonecreek: In reading this thread, I'm very thankful that my wife & I were stopped in the Durham area of NC during our move from the Yankee enclave of Illinois. We purchased a retirement house two years ago and even though I am thinking about a coastal condo in the St. James area also, I have been enlightened by LeRoy that all of you Northerners are taking over that real estate and changing the entire culture of coastal NC. It seems we will have to stop in Mid NC and not venture further East and South for fear of more disruption to the Southern part of the state. Thanks all for the education! Good luck with your upcoming trip to St. James and I look forward to your posts to verify that you and your kin got out of the area without injury and dismemberment.

tbill, your genuine concern for our welfare is appreciated and brings a spot of moisture to my older baby boomer eyes.... we will indeed endeavor to be alert and careful on our visit.... bringing extra cash for the restaurant upcharges and re-thinking the sweatshirts with New Jersey emblazoned on them.

Without the Yankee influence, there would be no Restaurants still in Business down there.
