Congratulations to you and your wife first for the 100% successful treatment of her cancer and second for your purchase and upcoming move to SJP!!
If all goes according to my plan, I will be moving down in 1 1/2 - 2 years and I can't wait! This past November I was visiting SJP (along with some future neighbors who are now friends) with my girlfriend and we borrowed a couple of the bikes they had at the Marina. It was the first time that I had been on a one-speed bike since I was about 12. We biked over to Woodlands Park, where I bought my lot and did some exploring. SJP seems like a nice relaxing place to take a bike ride and I am looking forward to doing it with a bile with more than one gear! I now believe that SJP is best seen by bike!
Enjoy your upcoming move from Maryland and the escape from the rat race!
Can't wait to move to SJP, now only if we could get a Wegman's!
Well, we are getting a new supermarket, but not a Wegmans. Can't wait to get back down to SJP. This polar vortex hanging over NJ is driving me crazy, LoL.
Wegman's is the premier supermarket here in Syracuse. I keep telling the missus that is one of the things I'll miss most when we move down to SJP... great quality and selection. Was there a rumour that Trader Joe's was coming to the Southport area? What is the new supermarket and it's location?
I contacted Wegman's and they said they had no plans to move to the area, it was way out of their distribution range and would be cost prohibitive.
We will miss it too.
No plans for Trader Joe's either, the closest one is in Wilmington.
For decent chicken and beef try Randy's on 17 S near Shallotte. They have some good BBQ sauces as well
My wife loves WHOLE FOOD, which is in Wilmington, 5 to 8 minutes after crossing over the Cape Fear River Bridge. She also likes the fact there is a STARBUCKS nearby. There is a HARRIS-TEETER on Rt. 17, about 5 minutes short of Wilmington.
As for the new "to be built" grocery store, everyone says it will be a LOWES. It will be located at 211 and Midland Road, less than 5 minutes from the Seaside Gate and behind the "Worms and Coffee" store.
There is a LOWES and a FOOD LION, near the intersection of 211 and Oak Island Road. BTW - in the same area is a CVS and Rite Aid, LOWES Home and Building Supplies. A mile or so farther down is the infamous WALMART. Why "infamous?" Go read the earliest postings on this forum. You won't believe some of the "trash talk" that was going back and forth then.
FYI - Taking the MIDLAND Rd to Rt. 17 route (the quickest route) - Wilmington is 28-29 miles from the MAIN Gate and 26-27 miles from the SEASIDE Gate.
We've shopped at the Lowe's on Oak Island Road and were pleased with the selection (not a Wegman's though). Surprised that that another Lowe's is being considered in such close proximity to the existing. Yeah, I remember reading that about the "personal shopping day" for SJP folks, but we won't revisit that (hopefully)! Here in the suburbs of Syracuse, we drive about 15 to 20 minutes to the nearest quality food market and 20-30 minutes to shopping malls, so not too much of a difference at SJP. We flew into Wilmington on one of our visits (Charlotte on another) and spent most of our time surveying the local scene, so have not ventured out to Wilmington for shopping, etc. I know that some think the distance to large retail shops is a detriment, but we're used to a little drive. Cleared the driveway twice today! Polar Vortex arrives tonight (can't wait)! Two more winters baby and we're movin' south!
Checked out a BBQ place on the main drag on Oak Island on our last trip...not bad (the name escapes me).We have some great bbq here in the 'cuse at the Dinosaur BBQ. Would like to find out about a good local "carolina bbq" place around southport that we can visit in February if one exists. Will have to take a drive to Randy's and give it a try.
I love the Oak Island sub shop (next to the Post Office). The way subs should be before we had Subway and Blimpies.
My DH loves Subway, I won't get anything there since they cut the BMT innards in half. Like a big bread sandwich. Will have to try the Oak Island sub shop. Not sure when we'll be down again, getting the house ready to sell.Dreading the weather heading our way.
Get the shovel out in CT. I am in Jersey and the white stuff is on its way. The only bright spot is that sometime within the next 8 weeks, I should be back at SJP.
