The former Days Inn at 925 Broad Street, New Bern, North Carolina 28560-4831, the southeast corner of Broad Street and Queen Street in the city of New Bern in Craven County, North Carolina, has been the subject of redevelopment.

The New Bern Board of Alderman voted in their meeting Tuesday, 12 July, an ordinance that would allow the city to demolish the six-level structure the Board chooses to. The structure has had opportunities to be brought up to code. The Board of Alderman will still consider ideas from suitors to purchase the building and renovate it.

That is an incredibly ugly building. I would hope someone choses to demolish it. I would hope for a more low-rise replacement, pehaps with a colonial theme tying it to the Tryon Palace.

How many opportunities does the city of New Bern have to invest in mid-rises to increase the density of residences and some retail?

True, it is one of the few buildings of that height. The article indicated it would be quite expensive to remove the asbestos and renovate.

If it could be renovated into apartments with ground-floor retail, and there is sufficient parking, I would not object.

I hate to say low-rise developments contribute to sprawl. Sites are not maximized and density is not increased. If the city of New Bern is moving away from sprawl, it seriously needs to consider and champion mid-rise developments.

No offense, but very few would find that a desirable location for an apartment.

We used to joke about how many secretaries had been fired for booking their boss into the "Days."

Is Broad Street currently desirable for redevelopment?

It is very close to the public housing projects at Craven Terrace. Those won't go away, so I don't think that particular block is attractive for much except cheap retail or subsidized senior apartments.

Craven Terrace is an opportunity for the Housing Authority of the City of New Bern to replace substandard public housing with affordable low-income housing.
