Last year we visited OBX for the first time and loved everything except getting there. I-95 was eternal and then the last 15 miles took hours. We want to travel on a Friday this year to avoid that hassle. We are looking for the fastest route and for suggestions on a motel for Friday night. We could stay along the way or in Nags Head. Does anyone have any ideas?

Using Interstate 66 and Route 17

or Route 33 to 29 to I64 which completely avoids I95

I95 can be a parking lot on Fridays in the summer.

Wink Of course you could go over the mountains

I have never been this route, but I have been over the mountain on Interstate 64 which goes from Lexington over into WVa. and that's a nice road.

This is a direct shot, but I suspect there are a number of twists and turns.

Where are you heading? The Northern beaches of Corolla and Duck are
lovely. If you are heading to the South, the I 64 route is easy but a bit
roundabout.
Besides, it would be so nice here if it was EASY to get to.

Thanks for the tips. We are staying in Nags Head at one of the Seven Sisters houses. We went home through the mountains last year and it was almost worse than I95. But the other routes sound possible.

Suspect the trip would be a lot easier if you traveled on Thursday to your destination and waited until Monday to return. Friday and Sunday traffic will have you speaking to yourself, in a loud voice, using many foul words. Then.... there are the ubiquitous hand gestures....
