Has anybody noticed how Sunset Beach NC has become so crowded? Hope it will be better this year. Last year it looked like Coney Island, particularly on summer weekends.

It may have been more crowded but it is still very clean and a good family beach.
I think the bridge is the reason it will continue to be crowded. I liked the swing bridge a little inconvenience made more people stay away, so much for progress!

I think it has more to do with when high tide comes in. At low tide there's tons of room....

I go to Sunset Beach every year, we go in late July. Our first year I believe was 1997.

Compared to Ocean Isle, I think Sunset is less crowded and more calm. However, ever since the new bridge opened it seems to me that the island has been experiencing more of a development boom than Ocean Isle. Not only is a lot of previously undeveloped land becoming duplexes, older properties are also being torn down and rebuilt. I've noticed a lot more construction sites on the island in the last 5 years than the previous years before the new bridge.

I wouldn't worry about it becoming overcrowded. People will still flock to Myrtle and Hilton Head.

I liked the little swing bridge, met lots of folks waiting for that bridge to open.
The thing that might keep the crowds in check is the lack of parkng on the Island.
Sunset Beach is still the best!

My husband and I moved to Sunset Beach Memorial Day weekend. We walk the beach 6 days a week, clocking over 140 miles in July. We get there early, around 7 - 7:30, and we always get a parking space. Everyone on the mainland, island and beach appears to be very friendly! As a new resident, I can't say if foot traffic on the beach has increased but, I can say this is a beautiful area and the beach is great! We are really happy that we chose to move here!

Reporting back in. I did think it was more crowded especially down by the pier. It's not bad elsewhere, but right by the pier is too crowded for the likes of me. I've been going down to Sunset for the past 40 years so I've seen it when it barely had anybody on it. If you get on down to the Bird Island end you can find some breathing room for sure.

Carrying beach chairs, blanket, towels, cooler, boogy boards, grand kids' toys etc. makes the hike to Bird Island a bit unrealistic for me at age 73. I guess the answer is just deal with it!

PS Great bathrooms also keep us anchored near the pier...
