Holly Ridge obviously has a lot less to offer for amenities than Charleston. It has basic shopping such as the food stores, dollars stores. For doctors you will find family practice. But for specialists, you have to drive to Hampstead or Wilmington. It is not beautiful, and its only history goes back to World War II, so it lacks the charms of Charlston. But it is safe.

Taxes in Onlsow County would have about a .6 mil rate, or about $1250 in taxes. If you are in the incorporated parts of Holly Ridge, you pay a bit more for police and fire department.

It would help to know why you are moving and a budget. Are you retiring? Do you need jobs?

If you are retiring, then Leland and Southport are very popular places. However, they are a bit more more expensive than Holly Ridge. For example, you won't find much at $200,000 except condos, townhouses and very old ranch houses. A decent-sized single family house in one of the popular plantations costs $325,000.

OK, I tend to forget about those, as I assumed you were retirees. There are some developments that seem to be oriented to very young people with kids. I think that Leland or Southport would probably be better for you than Holly Ridge. Holly Ridge has a lot of military families who move every two years. It is hard to keep friends with so many people moving all the time.

The area has a lot of retirees, but Leland has more young people. The median age in Leland is 40+, and the median age in Southport is 55+. If you are marketing cell phones, I would assume you need a younger population to make money.

Again, if you are marketing cell phones and make commissions, be aware that Verizon has the best coverage. You may end up making less money.

Leland or Hampstead would make the most sense for a young couple that didn't want to pay Wilmington prices.

Holly Ridge if you had some ties to the military in Onslow Co. but there is just not much there and the traffic is not fun to get to Wilmington. Speaking of which, the construction on the causeway from Wilmington to Leland is now open, which will significantly help the traffic issues, although until the bypass opens at the end of next year, it will still be a headache at rush hour and in the summer.

Agreed. The only advantage to Holly Ridge is that one person could commute to Jacksonville and the other to Wilmington. It rates a 2 of 10 as far as amenties as it has no grocery store and the only medical service has a nurse practioner. Surf City rates a 3 out of 10, with a grocery store, a Walmart and a doctor and dentists.
