If you look at this map and zoom out on it
outer banks, nc - Google Maps
Roanoke Island includes Manteo and Wanchese alot of locals live in this area due it is cheaper than by the ocean. It is surrounded by Albermarle Sound and Croatan Sound and Roanoke Sound.
When you cross the bridge you have two options to go Northern Outer Banks or Southern Outer Banks.
You will see Corolla at the top IMO Corolla is a little more high end beautiful area with nice mix of forest as welll same for Duck.
In the southern shores it includes Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head.
This area is probably most develop area and where most of entertainment and chain stores are located.
South of Nags Head across the Oregon Inlet you enter Cape Hatteras Island this area is mostly protected from development so you will only find beach rental homes, mom and pop type shops and restaurants. The towns on this island are mostly the same with their own personality. The land width is not that large so you can walk from the sound side to the ocean side pretty easy in most places.
Buxton and Cape Hatteras have that small North Carolina beach town feel but I think a little more high end due to the Yacht clubs.
Ocracoke Island is an awesome place but you can only access it by ferry. The ferry ride can take least 45 minutes or more depending on ferry to get to. If you are coming from the North end most of that part of island is sand dunes and it can take least 20 minutes to get to Ocracoke itself.
I cannot think of any area I would avoid they are all great locations depending on what your needs are.
Sunrise over the ocean with a sunset over the sound very tranquil and romantic.
