Since moving into my neighborhood 3 months ago, I've had a lot of problems with people speeding through here. There are a lot of children in this area with no sidewalks to play on. It's a subdivision on the outskirts of New Bern....some are homeowners and some rent. I'm not the only person who has a problem with the speeders......a lot of other parents have voiced their concerns along with me. I honestly have no idea where I would start in this process. It upsets me that there is no speed limit sign posted for this area and people speed through here in the evening knowing that the neighborhood is full of kids riding bikes.
NC law states that if there are no speed limit signs then the speed limit defaults to 55 MPH. Are the roads private? Look at the street name sign and see if you see the letters "SR" followed by 4 numbers. If there is no SR then they're private roads that haven't been accepted by the state.

Or you sure that's not 35? Or is 35 a city imposed limit?
Thank you Richard. I just checked the street signs and saw that there is no "SR" on them, so I guess all these roads back here are private. So does that mean that there is nothing I can do? I've talked to the neighbors before who I have seen speeding. I was nice and just asked them if they could slow down because my kids like to ride their bikes out here. They said they would slow down, but from what I have seen they haven't. I'm not trying to tell people what to do or create trouble, I'm just concerned for my kids' safety because some of these people really speed through here.
Are you inside city limits? Because most (all) city limits have a 35mph limit outside of other posted zones. If you're in city limits, I would contact your city council member. Hopefully you could get enough support to either lower it to 20mph (or whatever) and/or put in speed calming areas.
Yes, we're within city limits. I will look into contacting a city council member to see if they can help. There are no speed limit signs or speed bumps or anything here. It's just a small suburb near the outskirts of New Bern. The area is pretty nice overall, but I'm sort of regretting not choosing an area that had sidewalks. I trust my kids.....I just don't trust other people.
From above it sounds like it is a private non DOT maintained road.
