Hi, my husband and I are planning on retiring in 3-4 years and want out of CT. I've begun researching areas and Sunset Beach looks absolutely beautiful! We have friends in Myrtle Beach (and North Myrtle) so we'd like to be some what close to them but do not want to live in MB. We like areas that are quiet and not in the middle of a lot of busy touristy areas. We love to hike, kayak and just being outdoors. We'd rather not be in a new subdivision, and would love to buy a house that has some privacy. Any thoughts, comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I think Sunset Beach would be a good choice for you. I have liked the looks of an older development called Carolina Shores. There are also non-development houses which would offer you more privacy. With the newer developments, the lots size is sometimes smaller than a quarter acre.
1/3 of the town of Sunset Beach is located on the barrier Island that it now shares with Bird Island. The other 2/3's is on the mainland between Calabash, NC and Ocean Isle Beach, NC.
The Island has mostly vacation/rental homes with few year round residents. In the "off" season, the island is pretty quiet, not so much during the summer season.
The mainland of Sunset Beach has 3 main developments, Oyster Bay, Sea Trail and Sandpiper, all planned communities.

There are lots of people her from CT. you will fit right in.
I live next door to SB, Calabash, it is really just one area, and have heard for 14 plus years, "I wish I coulda', shoulda', woulda' moved here sooner.

We love the Sunset Beach area (after vacationing in MB and North Myrtle Beach for years) and hope to retire there in a couple of years too.

You are so right Quick Enough! I figured Thistle Downs was pretty small to mention with only 145 estate homes in the neighbourhood.
We have a lot in Ocean Ridge and our "official" address is Ocean Isle Beach not Sunset Beach, even though their beach house is on Sunset Beach (the island).
I just bought a home in Ocean Isle Beach, on the mainland. We won't be moving in permanently for 4 years, when we retire. We have freinds in Calabash and we have stayed with them while we looked around, I relate to the OP's desire to be in a quiet area. Our freinds live in a very nice community with very active social activities which are important to them. But I found the homes too close together on small lots, and wouldn't be comfortable there. We found a nice 3 bed 2 bath home on an acre which is great for us since we enjoy gardening. My wife is concerned though about snakes! We too enjoy hiking and I hope to get my wife into kayaking, she has a fear of water! I really like the whole area.
An unrealted question: We just closed on the house, the septic system needed some work before we could close. So our lawn is pretty well torn up and I won't have a chance to do anything about it until I come down at Christmas, will I have any chance of successfully seeding a lawn at that time?

I think you have a chance of seeding the lawn in December, as it won't be that cold. However, most new homes use Centipede turf to establish a lawn. You might check with some garden centers and see what they suggest.
Thanks Goldenage, I was going to go up to Shalotte to the Home Depot or Lowes and see what they had to say, perhaps I'll locate a garden center closer to Ocean Isle Beach.
