Long story short, I was assaulted by my husband, and need to get out of this town. He has left me with no money, no help, and a lot of emotional distress. I am looking for a nice place to bring my kids, that has decent housing prices and good school. The biggest thing is I dont have a lot of money, but enough to get in somewhere. Any reccomendations? Or where to look to rent privately rather than an apartment?

It would help if you gave us a realistic budget for the size of the apartment you need. I don't know what "good housing" prices are. I have also assumed you will need a job.
One example might be Hampstead which has well-rated schools and is commutable to the job markets in Wilmington. Another place with good schools is Newport, near job markets in Morehead City, Cherry Point and Jacksonville. Dare County on the Outer Banks has good schools, but IDK if you could survive in the seasonal job market.
If you need to rent privately, could I assume it is because your credit rating is low. In that case, you might need some time to re-establish a good credit rating. There is a MilitaryByOwner.com web site which contains rental housing owned by military people. It is open to clients who are not military, but you would still need good credit. You might find a small house or mobile home around Cherry Point or Camp Lejeune.
The job market around Jacksonville is not bad, but it tends to be in the service sector-- restaurants, health care, substitute teaching, etc. I also saw signs for school bus drivers recently.
The disadvantage of the Jacksonville area, like Sneads Ferry, is that the schools are over-crowded.
I wish you well, but in general, I am skeptical that moving will be the best solution. I believe that divorced women still need the support of friends and family in their existing home.
Be careful of transporting kids across state line without Dads permission....and walking away may make a case for Abandonment in the divorce.
