My wife and I are planning our retirement for about 10 years from now. We live in California now are in our mid 40's and can both take early retirement in about 10 years with pensions. We have no children so nothing is tying us to California. My wife has a best friend who just moved to Havelock so she would like to live near there. But we raise chickens now and want to be able to have chickens there and goats and possible horses. We are thinking about buying our retirement home next year or so and renting it out til we are ready to move.

It is a nice dream, but are you really prepared to manage a rental property for 10 years from across the country?

My wife's friend had a property manager for her house in Havelock for almost 10 years before she moved. People so it all the time. I'm not looking to make a bunch of money from renting just lock in a home at 2018 prices not 2029 prices. North Carolina is very affordable compared to California and that's what I want when i retire.

You should make a visit to Havelock before making a decision to move there. It is close to USMC Cherry Point and much of a military town. Highway 70 is a busy main drag through there, so look on the outskirts of Havelock.

Havelock? There are far nicer areas of NC to move to...have you ever visited the area? If you want to know about keeping animals, call Craven County and ask about the regulations.

I'll add my personal opinion that owning a rental house 3,000 miles away is not a good idea, especially for 10 years. And prices in Havelock aren't rising that fast.

Havelock is not really a desirable area in NC. It's fine if you have to be there or have family in the area or something, but it's certainly not a popular retirement destination like say New Bern or Emerald Isle or somewhere else. I think it would be a huge culture shock from California depending on where you're coming from.
