I am looking to take a day trip to one of the beaches around Wilmington? Any suggestions for a good spot if we are coming with a 1 year old? Looking for a good beach to walk around on that has little shops/restaurants near the beach. Any suggestions would be great.

I agree with Carolina but Oak Island is pretty cool too and Emerald Isle can be good if you find the right spots!

So we ended up going to Carolina Beach. The beach itself was very nice, but I wasn't a fan of the surrounding area. Many of the shops were closed down and being redone, and just has a generally unclean feel. I know that since I went in late Feb, its out of season and that is going to happen, but still. Maybe I'll give it another try in late Spring! However, the Hampton Inn right on the coast there was super nice.
