My Marine is in Camp Johnson, NC and I'll be visiting him in April. I've heard there's not much to do in the nearest town of Jacksonville but I'll have a rental car so we'd like to explore other areas; any ideas appreciated.

New Bern is a pretty, historic town near J'ville if that interests you. J'ville is about an hour from the beach, if you're interested in that. Lots of great restaurants in nearby Beaufort. You could go to Harker's island get a boat ride over to Cape Lookout National Seashore and walk on a virtually deserted beach and see the light house and old houses there (now abandoned).

If you are there from April 11 through 15th, you could visit the Azalea Festival in Wilmington. North Carolina Azalea Festival | A Scene to be Seen!

Otherwise, Wilmington's waterfront is a good day trip. Plan to see the Battleship North Carolina, the railroad museum or shop at the Cotton Exchange.
