We will be closing on our house here in CT on April 16 and are looking for a long-term house rental in the Wilmington, Hampstead, Southport or Oak Island areas. We have a very sweet 11 1/2 lab-mix rescue dog.

The buyers on our house won't have mortgage commitment until April 6 and our realtor said we should not sign a lease until we have that commitment.

We plan on heading down to Wilmington towards the end of March to check out rentals (we'll spend about 5 days). My question is, if we were to see something we like online or when we're down there at the end of the month, is it possible to put down a deposit and hold a rental until we were to get the mortgage commitment?

Any advice, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't think anyone can answer that question for you. Every landlord will view the situation differently. My advice would be to not mention it until after you look at the property, and establish some sort of in-person relationship with the landlord. You might have to put up a few hundred dollars that is non-refundable in order to get a landlord to take the house off the market for a week or 2.
