Thanks all of you , so informative. I feel like Wilmington is the place for me. I am 73 and my life in Teaneck New Jersey has become untenable. Born on the Lower East Side of New York City if I could afford to I would live in the West Village. Downtown Wilmington seems like the next best thing.
Please take your time. Don't be in a rush to make a decision.
Still trying to wrap my head around the West Village and Wilmington being sister cities.
Since when does the "next best thing" mean similar? I interpret it as meaning the he'd like live in the W. Village, can't afford it, and so Wilmington is his second choice. That doesn't mean he's categorizing them as being the same thing.

Are you hoping to live without a car? Obtaining groceries could be a problem with the lack of full-size grocery store in downtown Wilmington. Medical care is also clustered around the 17th St corridor, not downtown. It is possible to get around by bus or bicycle.

I would not advise an 73 year old to get around Wilmington on a bicycle. And the bus would be quite frustrating. Ride share services such as Uber and Lyft, and grocery delivery services such as Instacart and Shipt would be much better alternatives to driving.

The fact that he is using the two places in the same sentence and not in comparison makes zero sense to me.

He didn't use them in the same sentence. He used them in two separate sentences. And I don't think of the phrase "next best thing" as a comparison. The phrase "next best thing" means choosing the thing that is best, if you cannot have or do the thing you really want. It doesn't imply the two options are equal, in fact, it means the opposite.
For example, if someone were to say "I'd like to got to Europe for vacation this summer, but I can't afford it. I guess going back to Wrightsville Beach is the next best thing". Would you interpret that as comparing Wrightsville Beach to Europe? I wouldn't. It simply means they can't afford a european vacation, but they can afford Wrightsville Beach, so thats what they'd choose.

Downtown Wilmington has a free trolley. And there is a proposal for the full service 30K square foot grocery store across form the PPD headquarters.
There is a 5th Avenue in downtown Wilmington. And a river. And Historic buildings. Stores, restaurants, public transportation, sidewalks, etc...
