We are getting ready to build our home now in Ocean Isle Beach North Carolina and would like to know the best time to leave our area to avoid most of the traffic I would assume by Baltimore and DC area leaving very early in the morning? Or leaving later at night?

If you can leave overnight and hit Baltimore around 2-3am you'll be golden. That route 270 though is always tough. If you want to leave during the morning plan to hit Bmore around 11

Ummm...never?

Sorry, had to Two weeks ago we drove from SE PA to north of Wilmington. We left at 2 am and drove straight through with only two quick stops. It took ~8 hours and was pretty much smooth sailing the entire way. Sure, we arrived tired but it was a whole lot nicer than 10 hrs plus the stress of driving with a lot of traffic. Would, and will, do the same again. Have a safe trip.

Google Maps uses its vast archives of traffic data to estimate trip durations based not just on start and end points, but on the time and day that you expect to leave:

This is what they show for Pennsville to Ocean Isle Beach (OIB). Change origin to your own home, plus the time and date for departure and see what works best for you.

Since you’re South Jersey, see if a route thru Maryland’s Eastern
Shore works. You can take the Chesapeake tunnel thru Norfolk.
It might be a little longer for you but the drive is a lot easier than
the MD/DC/Northern VA mess. We’ve done it a few times this year
since we moved from Maryland.

Just be aware of the $15 toll to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

But I do agree that the route you suggested isnít a bad alternative as long as tolls arenít a deal-breaker for the OP.

Now that Summer is here I would forget Saturdays and Sundays. We drive back and forth to the Jersey Shore year round and we time it that we hit the DC area around 10 am and we usually don't hit bad traffic. Biggest issue we have is if there's a car accident and everyone stops or slows down to view. Time won't have any affect if there are accidents.

Does the Google Maps link that I gave you in my earlier post help?

It lets you change the start point to Mt Laurel, or your exact address, and the exact address of your destination, if you want.

Stops add to the total duration, of course. However, by changing the start time and day, you get a good idea of which start time is quickest.
