My wife and I have lived in Raleigh for several years. We normally go to Carolina beach. We have driven through emerald isle once, stayed in Beaufort for a couple days. I would like to do something this summer that's a little different. Someone mentioned Ocracoke but I have questions.

We would like a quiet beach, good restaurants, some small shops or other interesting stores to visit. Nothing really touristy like Myrtle Beach.

Which ferry do I take coming from Raleigh? Looking for quickest way there.

Is Ocracoke recommended if we just want an overnight trip? Meaning arrive one day, stay the night, and then drive home the next day? How about a weekend trip? Or is it too much and best enjoyed when we have more time?

Im open to other recommendations as well. I like Carolina Beach because they have some good restaurants and a few good bars. It's a little touristy but not too bad. Looking for a different experience with this trip rather than a traditional beach town, and it seems like Ocracoke fits the bill.

Already visited those sites. Asking for recommendations is part of the research I like to do when planning a trip. TBNT!

Seems like quite a haul for one night? Plus, maybe it’s me but not all that impressed with Okracoke myself. Went every year while our group was in Hatteras Village and always felt like a wasted 45 min ferry ride to walk around and go to Howard’s Pub. Jmo.

Not sure it fits your requirements at all but wife and I were just in Surf City and absolutely loved it. So much so we’d like to buy or build something there.

Thanks for the info. What did you like about Surf City?

Ocracoke is way too far for a one night visit. Its a 3 1/2 drive to Cedar Island, then a 2 hour ferry ride to Ocracoke. So its almost an all day thing to get there, and all day to get home. I'd want to spend at least 2 days there, so thats a 4 day weekend, minimum, imo.

Surf City is very non-commercial and laid back. Unless you rent a place near the very small commercial area, you'd potentially be miles from any stores or restaurants.

Oak Island sounds like it would work for you. Or maybe Southport. Not on the beach, but on the water, like Beaufort. Lots of great restaurants and a couple of cool bars.

Finding any accommodations for one night in the summer might be difficult.

I'd second Oak Island. Not too touristy. Several nice restaurants and bars. 10 min drive to SP where there are many nice shops as well as several good restaurants. Tons of charm in SP. only a 2 hr 4o min drive from Raleigh via the new 140. I'm down here almost every weekend.....hopeful full time within the next 3 months.

Southport and Oak Island. The town is quaint, several good restaurants in town and on the island.
