I lived in Wilmington for over a year back several years ago and I then had a traffic ticket (expired tag), silly me forgot to clear it before leaving NC.

Now I'm in Georgia and would like to get a Georgia's driving license ( I always have Virginia's license, have lived in that state for a long time ), I didn't realize Georgia's DMV found that there's a citation from NC DMV which needs to be cleared first before they can issue me a driver's license. So, I called up NC DMV and to my surprise, they told me now I need to pay $115 to NC DMV and then in addition, I need to pay New Handover county court a heft fee ($451 something), that's really way too much. A nice sounding lady at NC DMV suggested that I come over to the Handover county court in the early morning (between 8 to 8:30am) to talk to a traffic court judge about it and request he/she drop the heft fee.

A bunch of things run across my mind quickly:
How's the chance of meeting a very understanding judge when I come over?
One night hotel/motel expense + round trip gas consumption + time lost (opportunity cost) ?
a single trip would be 4 hours and 20 minutes.

Now, if I can make some money for this trip by conducting a workshop something that would help, btw, I'm a blockchain technology specialist.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

So there's a 9 hour roundtrip drive ( two full days )

As you point out, a hotel stay with breakfast, lunch and dinner AND the gas

And Georgia won't issue you a license without clearing it up....

A judge may / will point out that the entire mess is your fault in the first place.... which is true.

He / she will point out that ignorance of the law is no excuse..... which is also true.

Even if you make the two day trip and incur those expenses and time lost there is no guarantee that a judge will lessen the fine AT ALL .... and then it will cost you even more ..... but, even if a longshot happens and a judge were to cut it in half it's still better to cut your losses and just pay the fine without making the trip and get it behind you .... so you can get your new drivers license.

The world is not a fair place ..... sorry, but it's pretty much a no brainer IMO.
