Man, i thought the south was a bit more mellow. I mean, you want crazy drivers, just come to MA. My girl would attest to that, having moved here from Illinois!
This should answer some of you questions about Wilmington, NC
The following text is from an on-line discussion I had with Dana Page. I can't believe his cavalier attitude towards issues that affect many people. Although he's not an incumbent, his responses are the epitome of what is wrong with the current city council as they have done/said equally egregious things. It's given no thought by the Lexus and Beamer driving real estate people on the council, but poor (as in "no money") students and others deal with alternative transportation issues every day. Hopefully, this will encourage them to get out the vote.
There is an unbelievable amount of apathetic voter indifference and I am terrified at the prospect of someone like Dana Page getting elected to city council. If you thought the realtors were indiferent, check out the following discussion with Dana Page. We only need enough votes to defeat the well intrenched political machine and I bet that's only a few thousand. It could easily be defeated if someone could just get people to realize what issues are being decided for them by people with opinions like you'll read below.
His answers to my questions are pretty much beyond belief for a reasonable person, never mind a candidate for city council. If you are concerned about the responsiveness of the City of Wilmington to the needs of the people over the past several years, read this post and it might start to explain why. Reasonable people really need to start becoming more involved in their local election process or Dana and his friends will win every time (as Dana arrogantly proclaimed to me). Please forward this to your concerned friends and relatives and maybe we can make a dent in this election this time.

Comment by Dana E. Page 12 hours ago The city of Wilmingtwood is not supposed to be a Berkely California or some other hippie paradise. People in Wilmingwood drive cars and the bikes need to look out for the cars. If you want a bike paradise move to Cuba or China, They love bicycles there!

The topic of getting around in this city is a good one though and one of my long time pet peeves. I live in the Audubon area. Imagine how dangerous that is for pedestrians when you consider that there are no sidewalks in that whole area and through traffic races through there at 45-50 MPH! This city is HORRIBLE to bike or walk around in and it looks like Mayor Saffo has given it little more than lip service.
Speaking of which, there aren't any sidewalks or crosswalks anywhere on Oleander, even at the recently completed Mayfaire Mall area, and we have more-or-less All Real Estate developers sitting on our city council? Where is the irony in that?
Wilmington Candidate Profiles
Dana Page declares that the 16 million dollars spent on the new bike path was a "waste of tax payer money" and that money should have gone to increase the convenience to motorists. This town is already wholly given over to the convenience of motorists. What about people who can't afford auto insurance, automobile maintenance, registration fees, fees for traffic violations, car payments, etc.? They are left to fend themselves to the crazy driving public of Wilmington who perfectly understand that police will side with them, so they are entitled to run you off the road if you get in their way!
Please forward this to all people who are concerned about the leadership of their local government. This should provide ample proof what we've got rats in the attic, nibbling on the rafters of our local government!!!
Sincerely, Dave Smith
