The "North End" of Carolina Beach is where you can drive on the beach with a 4-wheel drive truck. It can get very wild during the summer months with kids being out of school and people out of town who have found this "local only" spot. The south end near Fort Fisher is were most of the locals go during summer months to fish on the beach and to avoid the crowds at the North End. You must have a four wheel drive to get on the south end at Fort Fisher also. Carolina Beach and the Boardwalk was known as a very rowdy place in the past. All of Pleasure Island has been geared towards changing that reputation for the past few years. The boardwalk has become a very nice place since the makeover and I am sure it will do nothing but improve. There is plenty to do for adults and children. There is the Fort Fisher Civil War site, Fort Fisher Aquarium, a new Go-Cart track, Carolina Beach Lake which you can ride around on a bike or rent some of the paddle boats. Of course the Boardwalk with the Famous Britts Donut shop, arcades, amusement rides and plenty of other shops. There are planned activies everynight of the week at the boardwalk and movie nights at the lake. Then the most important thing; the ocean and sand at the beach. I am sure you will enjoy your stay at Carolina Beach if that is where you chose to stay. Holden Beach is a nice quiet beach if you are interested in just hanging out at the beach. There really is not much more to do at Holden Beach. For writer keepitmovin - there are plenty of black families who vacation and live at Carolina Beach. I have friends who are mix couples and we have camped out at the North End several times. They come and stay with us and go to the boardwalk and beach with not one single problem. I truly think you would enjoy living at Carolina Beach.

Pleasure Island seems alot worse than Wrightsville We often walk on the north end of Wrightsville and that is very flat. Whenever I walk at Fort Fisher, I feel like when I go home my one leg will be 4 inches longer than the other.

Trust me, Carolina Beach is not "redneck beach". My husband and I live in NY (Manhattan) and own a condo across the street from the ocean in Carolina Beach and absolutely love the peace and quiet and solitude. There is mini golf, go karting, water parks as well as great restaurants. And even a mall (can you believe it?!?). There is a Courtyard by Marriott and the Hilton is building a mega hotel right on the beach. Wilmington is just 20 minutes away and worth checking out too. There is something for everyone. I hope this helps and hope that you will consider coming to Carolina Beach.

Yes... trust you... the person who owns an investment property. No agenda there.

I live in Wilmington and work regularly on all the barrier islands from North Topsail Beach all the way down to Sunset Beach. Carolina Beach is by far the most redneck, rivaling even Oak Island which is pretty redneck too. Holden Beach is far more relaxed and better suited for young children than Carolina Beach. Surf City and Topsail are probably better options too and they lack the erosion problems you'll find at North Topsail. Holden Beach is going to be a bit more expensive than the other options for obvious reasons. Ocean Isle Beach is pricey but nice too.

Carolina Beach has undergone some major changes in the last two years. Just today, the Wilmington Star discussed the dramatic changes on the boardwalk

Merchants, visitors say Carolina Beach boardwalk overhaul is gaining traction | StarNewsOnline.com | Star News | Wilmington, NC-

There's a reason that we have a Hilton Garden Inn getting ready to go up...many see the potential here.

I am getting ready for our 3rd summer beach trip while living in NC and we decided against Carolina Beach this year. We are going back to Topsail Island, but this time not the north end. Carolina Beach wasn't too bad, but where we stayed was closer to Kure Beach. I definitely saw some elements of why it can be called Redneck Beach, especially closer to the boardwalk where there were a lot of condos and at the other end where you can have fires and trucks on the beach. But, for the most part it was better than I expected. For our little kiddie lifestyle with a dog, Topsail Beach is just a better match for us. I did enjoy the extra activities like the aquarium and boardwalk, but we tend to be beach bum types who don't need a lot of excitement. Once again, Topsail Island better fits us. Thanks for all of the responses from my post last year!
