Oak Island - low speed vehicle/golf cart (buying a house, buying)

We are in the very early stage of buying a house by the beach. I have 1000 questions but will just ask this. I’ve seen parking at the beach for low speed vehicles, and I’ve seen them driving along E and W Yacht Dr. I’ve read they can only drive on 35mph roads and cross over 45mph roads. We spoke to a few residents who said you could drive from Yacht Drive area to the beach but I can’t seem to find a route. Oak Island Dr and Middleton are 45mph, according to google street view. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

There is easy access eastward from E40th, just connect to Pelican or Dolphin. As far as Middleton being closed to golf carts, they may allow you to swing from West Oak Island Dr., which I believe is 35mph. So you can use Yacht Drive to go under the bridge and take Middleton from the West, then catch Pelican or Dolphin.

To be sure call (910) 250-1684), one of the three golf cart rental/sales businesses, they can tell you all the nuances of golf cart usage on the Island.

I think being able to use carts to get to the beaches, restaurants, stores and super markets is a great option for Islanders.

Oak Island Drive is 35 mph from the Barbee Bridge to about East 45th Street. Middleton is 35 mph from Oak Island Drive to Beach Drive.

I can see your dilemma; if you were on say, W. Yacht Drive at 10th Street, your only path to the beach would be via 10th to W. Oak Island Drive (which is 45 mph) and then Middleton to the beach.

One solution would be to stick to the eastern end of the island where Oak Island Drive is 35 mph.

I'd call the Oak Island Police Department and ask them about it. The Town ordinance on golf carts can be found here:

It says golf carts are not permitted on Oak Island Drive, Beach Drive or Ocean Drive, but I have seen them being operated on those streets.

Used to live on E Yacht Drive when it was sand!

After they paved it, E Yacht became a high speed route.

I went into the police station one afternoon and said I had a question. Was the speed limit on E Yacht 60 or 70? I was confused.

Returned home and within minutes, heard the sirens as they began to pull people. There were sirens all afternoon as more and more speeders got pulled.

The next day my neighbor was pissed. Both his son and his son's girlfriend got tickets because some ^&%$)(&* had complained to the police about speed on E Yacht.
