Mapquest says the drive from Manteo to Morehead City via the Outer Banks is 5 hours and 20 minutes. Yes, to beaches and places to stop along the way.
The NC Blue Ridge Mountains are nothing like the Rocky Mountains. Our mountains are much, much smaller due to their age compared to the Rockies. The Parkway is an easy drive. Kind of like a paved two-lane country road, but with a much lower speed limit. Plenty of places to pull over, stretch your legs and get a closer look around.

A little more road detail on this map of the Outer Banks.

Ahh... thanks for pointing that out! So what part of the Outer Banks would everyone recommend? If we can't just drive along the whole thing...
Are there any particularly nice or pretty areas?

Lots of great suggestions. The Outer Banks are lovely.
My personal favorite coastal location is Southport and Oak Island - located south of Wilmington. Much less crowded than the Outer Banks. Mostly locals in Southport and Oak Island. I absolutely love it there.

Calm down. The smokies are nothing like the Rockies.

Ok... I'm calming... probably I'll love the mountains and never want to come home. That's what I'm hoping, anyway. The pictures I've seen look just wonderful, nothing scary at all. It's the sharp, jaggedness of the Rockies that got to me. I know the NC mountains aren't like that, so hopefully this will be a whole 'nother ball game.

Topsail Island is about thirty minutes from I-40. Our beach is truly a wonderful
family area and we do have campgrounds. Check the Topsail Island
Chamber of Commerce.

If you do the Outer Banks from the north, go all the way to Ocracoke, otherwise you're missing the best part of the trip. You only have 2 or 3 days, so you'll be driving most of the time to get down the Outer Banks from GSO. Consider New Bern or Wilmington, Atlantic Beach for a much shorter drive, but less scenic.
