Hubby and I may be relocating to the Greenville area for a job at ECU. I've been trying to gather as much info as possible on the area and am a little put off by what I'm hearing.
We're looking for an area that is - first and foremost - safe. We're a young couple with a small dog and no children, and we're willing to put up with higher rent and a longer commute in exchange for living in a nice, suburban-type area. We're coming from a suburb of Charleston, SC where it's safe for me to walk our dog alone at night and our biggest crime problem is people breaking into cars to steal stuff. My question is - do places like that even exist in Greenville? From what I've heard, it sounds like no place is really safe in the area. Are people overreacting, or are the dismal reports I've heard about crime in the area all true? From what I've read, it sounds like the Winterville area might be our best bet, but any input would be greatly appreciated! |

You must have read the "Leaving Greenville due to Crime" thread. I would say Winterville is a good bet for safety, but there are a lot of areas of Greenville that are safe as well.

My husband and I used to live in Greenville (before we moved to New Jersey - which we hate)....the best neighborhood that all of the young people live in is Lynndale. It is very safe as well...I would definitely look there...
I think most of the "crime" is down around ECU's campus...I do have a few very good friends that live in old historical houses down there and they have had problems with petty vandalism - people pulling out their flowers, bushes...etc.. A lot of newcomers move to Winterville....but I personally would rather live in Lynndale... |

We moved from So. New Jersey 5 years ago (TG) to Winterville. We live in a lovely subdivision called Manchester. It is a very close nit community. Most of the people who live here are working at ECU, Pitt CC, the hospital or are in law enforcement. We are within a 5 mi. radius to anything that you want or need. As stated in the other post, most of the crime is downtown. There are a lot of old established subdivisions in Greenville that are definitely safe. If I can answer any more questions for you just email me.

I am a builder in Greenville, NC. It is a great city with Great Potential for growth and the City absolutely loves their Pirates. On the whole the city is a safe place. Moderator cut: TOS Violation

YES...they LOVE their pirates....which can possibly be annoying to those of us that did not attend ECU....my husband and I are from New Bern and Kinston and attended NCState and Chapel Hill and I will tell you the purple fever can be annoying if you aren't a pirate fan.... However, I will say that I very much miss "G-Vegas" but maybe that is because we are in New Jersey now....it's awful up here!!! Do people still go to the Lounge at 505? I would live in Lynndale or Winterville.... |

Hi! I have lived in Greenville for two plus years and if you want to live "in Greenville" than Lynndale is a good choice. It is a rather large neighborhood with some of the nicest homes in town. I have started biking there and the local running group does runs in Lynndale as you can run for miles on quiet streets. There are also a number of newer developments off of Fire Tower Road, and Arlington (after Fire Tower). Another great road is Corey Road off of Fire Tower.
I would not currently buy property from 1st to 4th streets as that neighborhood is mostly college rentals and sketch areas. But, Greenville is growing and has a ton of potential. |

Much thanks to everybody!!!
We've decided to rent for a year near Arlington / Firetower Rd. and then reevaluate and see if we want to try a different area. I went up for an interview and only had two hours to check the area out, so your input helped me narrow my search considerably! Thanks!!! |

Arlington/Firetower is probably a safe area to rent.

I have been exploring NC in anticipation of my retiring in a few years. I found Williamston to be a very nice quiet, friendly and safe community I believe it's about 20 miles from Greenville. I have contracted to buy a beautiful 3,500 sq foot historic home which I intend to rent for one to two years. Anyone interested in renting can contact me at cyrcle@comcast.net no pets, security and references are required
