your assessment is partially correct. robbery and rape is slightly higher in the 28401 zip code. the murder risk is the exact same. property crimes are higher in 28411, as is burglary and aggravated assault. the lovely area of hampstead is MUCH worse crime wise than downtown. forest hills, 28403, considered by many to still be in "crime riddled" downtown, is the safest place in wilmington to live. their crime rates are 1/2, and in some cases 1/3 as bad as they are in ogden. my ex girlfriend lived on the corner of 3rd and orange street. the most dangerous thing she faced were the cockroaches. she moved to monkey junction. she said that she felt much safer living downtown. it's a matter of personal choice. if you can deal with the occasional panhandler, you will love downtown. they kind of get on my nerves though.

You can have all the lovely area of Hampstead....never have liked that area.
That's VERY interesting about 28411 compared to Forest Hills. You're absolutely right-it's a personal choice, but I still would rather take my chances at being burgularized than shot at any day.

No, I don't know why myself......but I would guess it's the high volume of drug dealers in this area. They are trying to get them off the streets and have had several drug busts which is encouraging, but there still seems to be a high volume for a city this size.

If you lived in Monkey Junction area, it's a pretty easy drive down Carolina Beach Rd to downtown (compared to College Rd that is). The zip code is 28409 & 28412 (depending on which side of Carolina Beach road you are on). However it will be hard to find apartment complexes in that area as it is more rural. There's a Veteran's Park apartment complex right by some schools and a park, but I hear it's not that nice of a complex (the mgrs don't fix things) plus it's past Monkey Junction and would be a longer drive.
There are tons of apartment complexes near the college. The crime might not be that bad, but you would have to deal with some rowdy college kids. But you would be fairly close to downtown (although you'd have to deal with Market St traffic).
Sorry I don't have any specific apartment complex names for you. I luckily rent a house that is cheaper than an apartment (b/c my mom owns it lol).
As some ppl stated, stay away from downtown. There are areas of downtown that are just fine, but until you become familiar with the area I would recommend playing it safe by renting further out. And keep in mind that you could rent something and get a roomate. Because this is a college town there are lots of opportunities for that!
And always lock your car doors! Even in some nice neighborhoods outside city limits I have been hearing about a lot of car break-ins.
