Relocating to Edenton, NC (Elizabeth City: for sale, crime rate, homes)

Does anyone have the scoop on WHY the crime rate is so high in this beautiful little town? I have been researching the coastline and found Edenton and Elizabeth City...it seems a perfect relocation site for a tired couple, but when I look at 'crime' data, it is 7 on a scale to 10.

Since we travel for work, the work situation isn't an issue, but while we are home we want to feel relaxed (and while we are gone, we want to feel relaxed...that our homefront is safe and sound!!)

BE CAREFUL FOLKS BEFORE YOU CONSIDER RELOCATING TO EDENTON. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
First and foremost - it is a lovely LITTLE waterfront town with lovely historic homes in its' center. But after the appeal of this wears off, you need to concern yourself with the high crime rate & number of projects, boarded up buildings, & number of thefts in the statistics. Many Edentonions carry concealed handguns for their protection. There are so many homes for sale because after living there, many decide to get the hell out of there & find a safer, friendler place to call home. There are NO jobs & little if any water recreational activities. The locals are small minded and clannish & the board of supervisors is run by greedy corrupt yokals. The school system is a horror show with the majority of students poor minorities. You must drive for hours to find decent shopping unless you enjoy fatback & grits at the local Food Lion with its rude grocery store employees. THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY NICE HOMES FOR SALE BECAUSE NOBODY WITH A LICK OF SENSE WOULD MOVE THERE!
