I live in a beach resort in DE and am looking for a cheaper place to live still within driving distance of the coast. So far, Edenton seems to be top on my list. My brother-in-law was there for a while in the 70s, and it seems pretty on the internet.
We are also looking into that area. We hope to relocate from upstate ny in a couple of yrs. Edenton sems quite nice, on the Albemarie sound and close to the shore. We plan to visit the area in April. We could only find rental homes in the outer banks area so it will be a drive from there.
Edenton is a great little waterfront town (and "down town" is little), but they have some good places to eat. It all depends on what you are looking for. We are moving down from NJ - having a house built in Albemarle Plantation which is in Hertford - the next town over (which has an even smaller "down town"). Albemarle Plantation is not age restricted, and has a golf course and marina. They are still selling lots and there is a wait list for building a house. There are other "developments" being built in the Edenton area. You may want to spend a couple of days exploring the area. It is just south of Elizabeth City. We are looking forward to getting away from the crowds, traffic and taxes of NJ. Albemarle Plantation has a special deal on a couple day stay with golf (if you're a golfer they have a great course). Google Albemarle Plantation and it should come up. This way you can also go over to Edenton and check it out.....There are several B&Bs in Edenton and of course places to stay in Elizabeth city...good luck.
Oh and the thing we liked about the Albemarle Plantation is that it is NOT a cookie cutter "development" where you have to pick from 4 or 5 models. As long as you stick to certain architectural styles (colonial, victorian and several others - just not things like modern or gothic or something outrageous), your house doesn't have to look like your neighbors. Edenton has a lot of pretty houses too.
Yeah, we are more rural type people. I did go to Edenton and loved it. We were walking around and spotted an historic house with a plaque reading,"Home of Edmund Hatch". Whats so weird? My grandfather was Edward hatch and so is my brother. We liked the outskirts becasue there was the river and sound but alot of open areas around the homes. We want at least 2 acres.
Thanks for the replies! It's now tourist season here (read: total insanity and horrendous work hours), so we won't be making any decisions now until closer to Labor Day, but I hope to get down to visit in the fall.
you live in Edenton? Tell me more about it? I thought it looked so awesome there. Is the sound polluted? I saw this huge house for sale when we were there. Right in town. Thought it would make a great INN.
In New Bern? I really am not a social butterfly, so having things to do for me is being outside having a berr with a neighbor, or having friends over for a good game of horseshoes or cards. I am not really a nightclub person or even a shopper. We only looked at Edenton becasue it said there was a ups hub there and Mike (bo)works for them.
