What ferries do you need to take to get to Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout? My wife and I are going to the Outer Banks in August, and of course we want to go out there. Do you still have to make reservations 30 days in advance?

We're getting really excited!

We're coming from the South. We're staying in Morehead City.

Ok Great.
Ok Cape Lookout is out on Shackleford Island and you will need to take a passenger ferry to that island. There is no driving on that island.
Waterfront Ferry Service Morehead City, NC 28557
(252) 726-7678
Passenger only ferry service to Shackleford Banks departs from Portside Marina, Morehead City.
Pets may be accommodated, but call first.

It is a private service if you are going in the summer I would call there is more up the coast line

To get to Ocracoke you will need to go to the Cedar Island Terminal

Cedar Island:
Take U.S. 70 East to Sea Level. In Sea Level,
take N.C. 12 North to the terminal
It about a hour drive from Morhead City to Cedar Island

On Ocracoke you have to drive the entire island to the other end. Make sure you get your drinks , restroom breaks while you are in the city of ocracoke there is not establishments on the protected land on the other side.

The Ferries do run slow due to their load I personally would not do Cape Lookout and Hatteras Island in the same day.

I've only taken the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry before. How long is the ferry ride that runs from Ocracoke to Swan Quarter and also to Cedar Island?

Click the link above it gives you ferry times and other ferry information that you guys are asking.
Oviously you will be covering greater amount of body of water that it will take longer than the hatteras - ocracoke ferry does and if you are going in the summer you may have to wait on another ferry if the one arriving becomes full before you load

We have our Ocracoke and Hatteras reservations made, and we're thinking about calling Calico Jack's based on your recommendation.
