We are potentially retiring/relocating to Wilmington area in the near future. We have a child entering Middle school next year, the other two oldest out of college and on their own. I have done a little research on the areas to move based on the High Schools stats. It appears that Topsail (Hampstead), Hoggard and Ashley (Wilmington) are pretty good academically and safe per the NC School report cards and SAT stats. However, I don’t have anything on the Middle schools. What’s the lowdown (both + and -) on Murray, Roland-Guise, Topsail MS, Myrtle Grove?

Last, we have friends in St. James and Winding River (without kids). Is there anything good that can be said for the South Brunswick HS and related middle schools? From other posts and some of the SAT NC Report stats it appears to be an area to stay away from if you have school age kids.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Here is a website that lists and "grades" all of New Hanover County schools. The middle schools are there.

District Search Results Page

I don't know a lot about the middle schools. My son went to Murray Middle in 8th grade, but he was home-schooled 6th & 7th grade. The teachers at Murray really seem to care about their students' performance. The leaders of the school are great in that they don't tolerate acts of violence. There are also a lot of options for students that are high-achievers.

I have heard that Topsail is a good school system, so I'd definitely check that out.
