We are moving to Raleigh in one month and we want to know what is the closest quite beach to Raleigh. We would be interested in buying a second home/condo in the area but we want it to be near the ocean but not on it and maybe associated with a golf course. Most important to us is short travel time from Raleigh and quiet. We are willing to spend up to $350K. Vacationed at Emerald island before and liked it, but that was fifteen years ago

You can read my travel guide to Emerald Isle (http://coastalnc.org/emeraldislenctravelguidecd - broken link) and get a good idea of how things have changed. This is a good set of recent area beach photos.

It is still one of the greatest family beaches around. It hasn't changed a tremendous amount though there are more services available. It has NOT turned into Myrtle Beach.

We moved to the Cape Carteret area two years ago. Our home is under ten minutes to the beach, we are in a very quiet water access community.

You can get a nice home near the ocean for $350K or under. There are some close to us.

I also have a blog which talks about living in Carteret County. There are lots of homes available and it is a buyer's market, but prices have not collapsed like they have in some areas of the country.

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to try to answer them. Taxes are still low in Carteret County, and in my mind it is one of the last great beach areas where small towns still rule.

I think there are a lot of reasons to love Carteret County and Emerald Isle is big part of why I am so happy living in the area.

This is a diary of our first year.
