I've been in Wilmington for the last 9 years and have lived in three differenct parts of town. I have never felt as though I was not safe and have never been a victim of crime. I would say that the biggest change is the influx of Yankee's. When I was a kid, we'd only see our northern friends during beach season. Now, it seems as though it is becoming a haven for Yank's and all their attitudes. That's the worst part, the attitudes are not laid back and more combative!! The city has made an effort to curb the downtown nightlife problems and it has been working. Out neighborhood is a mix of family's, single professionals and retiree's. We spend all kinds of time walking and tooling around our neighborhood and so do others! The traffic is getting worse by the year and the city and couty did not prepare for it at all!! Overall, I'm happy and don't see the high crime and other things like reported, I think some people just look for the worst.
Just wish we'd have more southerners move here instead of all the Yank's... But oh well, can't have everything!!!
If you like to stay busy, have lots of options for shopping, dining out , and cultural events Hampstead is not for you! I equate Hampstead to living in the country, meaning not a lot of options, except the houses built on top of one another and the traffic worse than I dealt with in Miami. Seriously if there is an accident on 17 you're screwed! Wish I never left ILM don't know what I was thinking moving to Hampstead.
