We'd like to vacation on the NC coast in February, 2009. This will be our first visit to NC. I know I said Crystal Coast in the subject of this post, but it doesn't have to be there (or is it the Emerald Coast? - sorry I'm so confused.)

We don't need to be on a beach, but we'd like to be within walking distance of one. We'd like to be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, etc. We're looking for a charming coastal village.

Which town do you recommend?

Also, we'd like to stay in a B&B - any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know that I can recommend a B&B within walking distance of a beach and restaurants. We can get you close.

I can suggest that you consider Beaufort, you would have the choice of a number B&B situations where you would also be close to the boardwalk and plenty of restaurants and shops.

We enjoyed staying in the Beaufort Inn many times. Most of the rooms have balconies facing the water, and there is a wonderful breakfast served each morning. It is not quite a B&B but very close.

However, getting to the beach would require a short boat ride or a few minutes in the car. There are plenty of B&Bs in Beaufort.

You could also stay at the Islander on Emerald Isle and be right on the beach. I haven't stayed there, but I understand it is nice, and I believe all the remodeling will be finished by fall. It's also not a B&B, but we don't just don't have one on the beach in a town.

Stores and restaurants would be a hike, but not impossible. There are bike trails and walking paths along the main road in Emerald Isle.

Here is a list of B&B accommodations (http://www.crystalcoastnc.org/accommodations/bedbreakfast/ - broken link). I just had some City-data forum visitors with me today and they were enjoying a stay in the Harborlight Guest House.

It is on Bogue Sound.

You can also check out my travel guides to Beaufort (http://coastalnc.org/beaufortnctravelguidecd - broken link) and Emerald Isle (http://coastalnc.org/emeraldislenctravelguidecd - broken link).

Good luck and I hope you have a great time.

Keep in mind the beach can be very windy during our 'winter period'. It can make a beach visit very uncomfortable because you might feel like your blowing away.

My favorite beach month is October, temps still climb, the ocean is warmer, and the rents are Cheaper. Good luck.

Beaufort looks perfect for us and I've already found two possible B&B's to choose from because of the link you provided. Many thanks!

Unfortunately, we can only go in February. Thanks for the heads up though. We'll be sure to bring warm clothes. Cheers

David - I enjoyed your nice travel guides! Part of the reason we're going to the NC coast is to see if it's a place we'd like to relocate to. Do you worry about hurricanes living on Emerald Isle?
