I've been talking about this very thing for a couple of years now. Folks tend to only look at the coast when tropical storms or hurricanes come rolling around. Sometimes the coast is untouched-But 100's of miles inland is affected. The two examples I usually give are Hurricane Hugo (1988) that severly impacted Charlotte and the two hurricanes in 2004 that affected the NC mountains.
Here's another exaample of us along the coast of NC not seeing so much as a rain drop or cloud from a tropical storm-But the western end of the state experiencing bad problems.

Haven't had much Fay rain south of Asheville so far. The Asheville Regional Airport in Fletcher recorded 0.96" yesterday. Winds 0-15 mph.
