Hi, what are the best beach areas for a family to live in NC? We have been looking in Myrtle SC area and cant seem to find anything. Is North Carolina better? We are looking for good schools and close to the beaches if possible.

I appreciate all your help.. Thanks!!

Wilmington NC is a nice-sized town and so is Charleston SC, both are river cities within 15 minutes of the beaches. They both also have some outlying suburb towns that have good schools, like Summerville near Charleston. Then there's smaller cities a little more inland, like New Bern NC.

Wilmington has great schools and pleanty of homes near or on the beach. Traffic is bad, but you will get used to it. I want to move back soooo bad.

If you are looking for smaller towns and for a slower pace of life, try NC's Crystal Coast between Swansboro and Beaufort.

The schools are very good in Carteret County. This ranking information was just in the local papers.

We live in the western end of the county near the beaches of Emerald Isle. It is great boating and beach territory. These are pictures I took on the water and walking on the beach over Labor Day.

I have a site which talks about why we chose Carteret County over lots of other locations on the east coast. There are a number of posts there about living in the area.

We can be on the walking on the beach in ten minutes from our house on the eastern banks of the White Oak River even though we live on the mainland.

We actually moved to the Outer Banks from Charleston SC. The primary reason we left SC was the schools. SC schools are terrible. Dare and Currituck Counties which is where the Outer Banks is located has terrific schools. They are ranked very high in NC as the top schools. The cost of livining is a little higher. Mainly housing costs are high, plan on renting you will need to budget around $1000 - $1500 for a nice home. We originally moved to Kitty Hawk, but soon got tired of all the traffic and crazy tourist. We now live in Grandy which is in Currituck County. Our children actually preferred the Currituck County Schools. I would have to say the people are more down to earth and easier to get to know.
I hope this helps.

I love Myrtle Beach and if I was gonna move to that area, I would be moving to Sunset Beach, located about 15 min drive from downtown Myrtle Beach.
