Aquarium’s sound-to-sea pier to offer access

PINE KNOLL SHORES — At a time when the state’s ocean fishing piers are dwindling due to the high price of real estate and high cost of repairing storm damage, Emerald Isle and the N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores plan to step in an offer the public some much-needed access with a new sound-to-sea pier complex.

The partners held a public information meeting Saturday at the aquarium with a special invitation extended to the property owners near the site of the project

For Jay Barnes, N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores director, the new Aquarium Pier at Emerald Isle will offer more than just another place to fish.

“It’s really a lot more than fishing. It’s beach access; it’s recreation, and for a lot of people it’s just enjoying the experience of being around a pier.”

Plans are to build a 1,000-foot-long concrete pier at the town’s Eastern Ocean Regional Access, which is near mile marker 15 on Highway 58 where the Emerald Isle Pier once stood. That pier was destroyed by hurricanes Bertha and Fran in 1996. The project will continue to the south with construction of a soundside pier directly across Highway 58 at the end of Park Drive.
