I will be moving from New York to the NC coastal area within the next 2 years. I am considering working in the University of North Carolina.

If I buy a home in Sballotte/Calabash area - about how long is the commute?

One website said that UNC was only 35 miles from Shallotte - Mapquest though is saying that it is 75 miles! Big difference! I assume somewhere between there lies the truth . . . .

Also - are there buses or trains that go to Wilmington from Shallotte?

It looks like about 35 to 40 miles, depending on where you live, but I would not equate that to minutes. I expect you will do pretty good to you get up to Wilmington, but I expect it will be slow going from there.

I know 35 miles may not seem long, but that is a lot longer, given the location, than I could tolerate.

Good Luck.

Thanks lln -

I also considered Brunswick CC as well - that college of course would be very close - but I assume also that there would be more job opportunities at UNC.

We will be visiting the area sometime soon - I will drive to the University to test it out.

As the crow flies from Shallotte, UNC is about 140 miles away, UNCW is about 35 miles away.

There is no one "UNC" campus.

Why not get hired first, then work out the logistics. There are several community colleges and 2 of the 16 UNC system campuses along the coast and competition can be steep, particularly if you are hoping for a faculty position. Also, we don't have the transportation system (LIRR/subway) that NY has.
