There is a BIG difference in 8 lanes of traffic all moving at 70 mph and lane hopping and 4 lanes of traffic easing forward a yard at a time. *S*

I would love to visit this wonderful place where everyone drives 70 MPH. Where I live we have people going 50 MPH in the left lane while others are passing on the shoulder going 90.

Hi-new to this forum, and see many folks are asking similar questions about the area, so I will try not to be redundant. Interested in the OUTSKIRTS of Wilmington, and would love some recommendations. Looking for a town with the small town FEEL, but still has some life to it, and within 30 minutes or so of the city, and preferrably some beaches. Not looking for schools or jobs: I am retired, but my daughter is 20, so we would like to be near things to do in both our age groups. Of course we, like everyone else, want to steer away from crime, and the cheaper the real estate, the better (will be buying a house). Also would like an area with nice fauna. Thank you to all that reply!

Burgaw is a genuine small town, but I am not sure it is lively enough for you. You would probably go into Wilmington for entertainment and good restaurants.

I think Southport is what you are looking for in you want a "small town", it has beaches nearby but can be a bit pricey. A 20 year old may find it a bit far (30-45 minutes) from Wilmington.

I would recommend you look instead toward southern New Hanover County. There are some affordable (just not too affordable) neighborhoods south of Myrtle Grove (locals call it Monkey Junction) and it give you easy access to Carolina Beach and Kure Beach which are really nice smaller beach communities that get jam packed in the summer, but the rest of the year are very enjoyable.
