Hi everyone!
We are looking to rent a single home that allows a small pet (pomeranian/not noisy) near the coast. We plan on buying in the not too distant future but want to explore the area first. We want small town with character, low crime, and lower traffic. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks much.

Southport would be ideal for you. I don't know what your budget for rent is, or how much room you need, or how close to Wilmington you need to be, but check out the State Port Pilot for rentals in this area. Just let us know exactly what you need and where.

Thanks seashellbell I will look into area suggested. We are looking at rent not much above $1400/mo. My husband is retired at 52. I will continue to work (aging caseworker). I like smaller areas with good views and near water.

I think Oriental would be ideal for your temporary home. Go to Towndock.net and see what you think.

The Crystal Coast is all about small towns.

There are plenty of rentals available in Carteret County, many of them long term. You can check out my reasons for picking this area after looking all the way from Virginia's eastern shore to Oak Island.

Emerald Isle
is just a great beach area.

You can check out the area services from this map and the crime statistics by looking at the Cape Carteret profile on City-Data.

Swansboro
, Cedar Point, Cape Carteret, Beaufort (http://coastalnc.org/beaufortnctravelguidecd - broken link), and Morehead City all have different personalities, but all are also close to the water and offer a safe, enjoyable area to live with a variety of homes available for any taste.

All of the large vacation rental firms do monthly or long term rentals. There are ones available that take pets. There also plenty of rentals available privately. If you cannot find some contact info, let me know, and I will be glad to help.

You can use my Emerald Isle Travel guide (http://coastalnc.org/emeraldislenctravelguidecd - broken link) to get an idea of the area before coming for a visit.

You can check out some of the area events at this site.

I believe New Bern would be the best place for you. It's such a charming town. Two rivers meet here, the Neuse and the Trent. The Neuse is the widest river in America. We have a great historic district, superb golf courses, & lots of local events. From New Bern the beach is a 45 minute drive. Greenville (college town) is an hour and Raleigh, our state capital is two hours away. It's a small town with big city advantages.
