I believe the new building at memorial & Arlington by Circle K is a car wash.There has been a sign there for quite a while announcing a new car wash.

Lidl starts hiring process.

Lidl grocery starts hiring process - Daily Reflector

Lidl, which operates 10,000 grocery stores in 27 countries in Europe, held its first public hiring event for store management positions in the United States at the Greenville Convention Center on Monday.
The company plans to open its first stores in the eastern part of the United States some time before 2018, and it is building a store in Greenville across from the Carmike 12 theater on Fire Tower Road. Officials have declined to say exactly when it will open or if it will be one of the first stores to open in the United States.

The hiring event Monday was for management positions for the first batch of stores it plans to open, which will be located from the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area down to Georgia. Those who are hired will undergo about six months of training, first in the United States and then travel to the United Kingdom or Ireland for hands-on training, according to Will Harwood, a spokesman for the store chain.

The hiring event began at 8 a.m. and a group of early risers stopped in, and then throughout the day, more people dropped by. They registered, heard a presentation about Lidl and then had a short interview. They will be called back for further interviews if they are qualified.

A 42-year-old man, who did not want to give his name because he didn’t want his employer to know he was applying for another job, is a district manager for a chain of dollar retail stores.

He had read that Lidl was opening a store in the area, saw information about the hiring event on LinkedIn and then saw the Lidl sign in front of the Greenville Convention Center, he said.

“Anybody who is in retail should be very well aware they’re coming,” he said about the German-based retailer. “If you’re in tune with what’s going on in the future, they’re definitely going to be a strong competitor coming into the United States.”

He was applying because he believed that there would be opportunity for growth as the company expands in the United States, and he could imagine having a long career with it.
Lidl, which opens its headquarters in Arlington, Va., already has invested in North Carolina. The Greenville store at 1800 Fire Tower Road is expected to be about 36,000 square feet and cost about $1.98 million, according to plans it filed with the city.

In Alamance County, about halfway between Durham and Greensboro on U.S. 40/85, Lidl has built a $125 million regional distribution center that will employ about 200 people.
Other regional distribution centers are being located in Spotsylvania County, Va., and Cecil County, Md., near I-95.

Lidl expects to bring its own brand of food to sell at its stores, plus find and sell locally produced food, Harwood said.

“Our bedrock principle is to sell really high quality at great prices,” he said.

Its specialty products include chocolate, which comes from its facility in Europe, and bakery items, fresh produce and meat.

“We feel like it will be unlike anything in the market,” Harwood said.

A typical Lidl store will employ 30-35 people. Management positions will pay up to $60,000 per year depending on the location of the store, Harwood said.

Lidl is looking for local suppliers, sites for new stores and employees. Companies can apply to be a supplier; people can suggest a site for a new store, and individuals can learn more about a career with Lidl at https://www.lidl.com.
I know Lidl is a main competitor to Aldi, but I really think this store looks cool and modern. Hopefully, a Trader Joe's will be the next big grocery development to come!

PCC master plan prioritizes traffic flow, pedestrian spaces - Daily Reflector

Reducing traffic congestion and increasing walkability are among goals Pitt Community College's Board of Trustees want to pursue in an updated master plan for the Winterville campus.

Officials have worked with architects with Boomerang Design for the last year to update its existing master plan for development and construction through 2021, said Rick Owens, vice president of administrative services. The architects delivered a final presentation on Tuesday. The trustees are reviewing the proposals and will set priorities in the coming months.

One priority is to close the roads in the center of campus, turning the areas into pedestrian walkways while parking and vehicle traffic are moved to the perimeter, said Charles Long, board chairman.

Currently PCC is divided by Reedy Branch Road, which N.C. Department of Transportation classifies as a minor thoroughfare.

With the school's Science Building opening, more traffic will be moving along Reedy Branch Road, Warren Drive and an unnamed street built to access parking behind the Goess Center and Leslie Building.

Angela Crawford Easterday, a principal with Boomerang Design, proposes building a traffic circle at the intersection to slow traffic and allow smoother travel through the intersection. State transportation officials are open to the plan, if the college funds the $750,000 construction costs, she said.

One day, the state will extend Fire Tower Road from Memorial Drive to the U.S. 264 Southwest Bypass, Easterday said. The extension isn't on the current state transportation improvement plans, but officials believe it will be fast-tracked once the bypass is complete.

Once Fire Tower Road is extended, the college could take over Reedy Branch Road. Closing that road could create opportunities for further construction on campus.

Brian Floyd, president of Vidant Health Medical Center, asked if any discussion was underway about building a parking deck. He said Vidant should have planned for a parking deck 20 years ago.

Given how the medical campus has developed, it would be too disruptive to build a parking deck now because there is no place to redirect the existing parking, he said. “When I look at this (campus) this look like what our campus was 20 years ago," Floyd said.

Owens said a member of PCC's Student Government Association recently commented PCC has plenty of parking, it's just not located where it needs to be.

PCC officials want to move parking to the perimeter of campus for safety, he said. If there is a critical incident and students have to evacuate, the current parking locations, with entrances and exits on to N.C. 11 and Reedy Branch Road, could create more hazards, he said.

Another transportation project involves linking the school's Davenport Farm property with the main campus.
The proposed route will cross near Swift Creek and through an area that is in the floodplain, Easterday said. Any crossing will require authorization from the state Division of Environment Quality and the Army Corps of Engineers.

That will require multiple studies to identify wetlands along the stream and how to minimize construction's impact on the wetlands. Studies also will be needed to minimize a crossing's effects on the floodplains. The most likely solution will be to build a bridge, Easterday said.

Creating adequate classroom space is always the main goal of the trustees, but in recent years the school has struggled to provide adequate space for programming outside traditional classroom settings. One recommendation is the construction of a welding classroom building.

Easterday said the current welding program has day and night classes Monday through Friday and additional classes on Saturdays. The plan proposes building a welding facility near the Craig M. Goess Construction and Industrial Technology Building located on Warren Drive. The cost of the facility hasn't been determined.

Another proposed facility is a 34,000-square-foot student advancement center. The first phase of the project would have space for the college's VISIONS program, which provides mentoring, career guidance and scholarships.

It would house the college's women's center and include offices for instructional advancement such as alumni services, scholarship office, the PCC Foundation, marketing and media offices. It also would have a meeting space that could hold 600 people at one time or be divided into smaller spaces. It's estimated cost could be $6.5 million.

"One of the key needs we have on campus now is space for large groups of students to get together for large events, such as having special speakers come in," said Susan Nobles, vice president of instructional advancement and executive director of the PCC Foundation.

The largest space on campus, the multipurpose room in the Craig F. Goess Student Center, seats 200. Several auditoriums on campus also seat between 120-125 people.

A workforce project technology center also is being proposed to house graphic arts and gaming development programs. No estimated construction cost was given.

Nobles said the Connect NC bond approved by North Carolina voters in March makes about $8.4 million available to PCC for construction, renovation and repairs. About $2 million of the Connect NC funding has already been identified for renovations at the Everett Building, which houses PCC's library.

Along with the construction of the three new buildings, renovations of several existing buildings also are being considered.

Looks like Ayden is stepping it up with their civic amenities.

Basketball courts, trail added to District Park plans - Daily Reflector

AYDEN — Basketball courts and a greenway trail recently were added to plans for the next phases of development of District Park in Ayden.

The features were added at the request of the Ayden Board of Commissioners, which first reviewed the plans Nov. 14.
Plans for phase 2A remain unchanged. This phase will include two 225-foot and two 350-foot baseball fields arranged in a cloverleaf pattern with a 50-foot-by-50-foot concession stand in the center featuring restrooms, a press box and brick paved walkways leading into the center. Phase 2A will add two parking lots. The estimated cost for phase 2A is $3.59 million.

Phase 2B will include a 300-seat amphitheater, three picnic shelters, a maintenance building, restrooms and concessions near the existing ball fields, and a walking track around the new baseball fields. Added will be two 80-foot-by-50-foot basketball courts and a greenway walking trail that will connect the park with the rest of the town. The additions bring the cost of phase 2B to $2.3 million — up from $1.49 million. The basketball courts are estimated to cost $60,000, and the greenway trail is estimated at $555,000.

The proposed basketball courts would be located near the beach volleyball courts and would include fencing, lighting and a surface similar to the tennis courts, according to Amber Idol, a project designer with MHA Works Architecture.

“You could bring the cost back if you don’t want the fencing or would rather do a concrete or asphalt surface,” Idols said. “This would be a nice court.”

The proposed greenway would extend from the Ayden Housing Authority property at the end of Juanita Avenue along the creek to the rear of the park, where it would connect with walking paths there. It would be an asphalt surface with lighting and would encompass 13,500 linear feet, according to Idol.

The path along the creek is ideal because the town already owns a right of way along the creek, and it would connect with sidewalks along Juanita all the way to Veterans Park, Ayden Manager Steve Harrell said.

“The right of way is some 20 feet wide, and it’s cleared,” Harrell said. “ ... One of the things that’s nice is that it’s all on town property, it wouldn’t require any easements or right of ways. … It’s also alongside the creek bed, so there’s the opportunity, with proper landscaping, to have a really nice multi-use trail that bikers, runners and walkers could use.”
The trail also has the potential to tie into long-term plans in the area to connect Greenville, Winterville and Ayden through shared greenway trails, Harrell said.

The board approved of the plans, and now it falls to the Arts and Recreation Foundation and others to find funding to pay for the expansions of the park.
With the SW bypass running right into Ayden, I'm sure the town is trying to position itself as a great place for hospital workers (or industrial park workers) to flock to to raise a family and have an easy 10-15 minute 70 mph commute to work. This is very good for Ayden and the "Greenville Area" as a whole.

Agree MB....the next step for the Greenville metro area (after finally revitalizing downtown) is to create legit bedroom communities.

Winterville is already one
Farmville is becoming one
Washington is partially one (Historic District/Waterfront)
Ayden has the potential to be one

Grifton/Bethel/Grimesland have a ways to go and just don't have any money.
