A great way to make something happen is to land a company that has ~ 1000 jobs and relies on local vendors as suppliers. Maybe developing a core competency in medical equipment manufacturing could be part of that.
Funny you should mention that considering Burroughs Wellcome/DSM's presence in Greenville.

The fact that the Greenville area, with over 100,000 people within 5 miles of the city center, couldn't/wouldn't support 2 home center/lumber yards of The Home Depot scale tells developer a lot about the area. And that new Lowes over on the east side of town, isn't exactly setting any sales records either.
And the "build it and they will come" theory is far from true. The whole of eastern North Carolina is peppered with "Global Transparks" that sit empty.
Even if Greenville were to land a semi pro baseball team, where would the attendees come from? There aren't but so many baseball fans in a town and most of them attend Pirates games now. Does everybody here that would like to see a baseball team, support the Pirates? If a new team comes to town, are you going to support both teams?

Well said, Richard. The Kinston Indians put on a great show. It was disheartening how few fans they saw. And, what a great ballpark!

The lack of support for the other athletic teams is, quite simply, unacceptable. For example...I have been to NC State volleyball matches that drew 3,000 people. I have yet to see more than a few hundred at ECU volleyball matches...disappointing...
3000 for an nc state volleyball game? Well that over doubles their average baseball attendance as they averaged just over 1000 a game last year for baseball. On the other hand ecu averaged over 3000 which was good for the 16th best in the country so ecu supports its baseball team pretty damn well. The tar holes came in at 41 with 1400 fans a game and they have a brand new stadium. Saying Greenville can't support a minor league team because people don't come out to watch our volleyball team that went 1-30 last year is ridiculous. There is no doubt that if done right that people would come out and support a minor league team at least at the single A level
I emailed the Corporate Office of PF Chang's they sent a response this morning--I am sorry we do not have any plans at this time of opening a PF Chang's in Greenville, NC at this time.

Football has much deeper roots in Eastern NC, starting at the high school level. Almost everyone who grew up here knows at least one person from their school who played for ECU. Basketball is a close second. Promotion also has a lot to do with it.

State's a larger school in a larger metro area with more alumni living nearby. All their sports programs will have a higher draw.

I just think this is very typical behavior for this area. There is the normal desire to have things like pro sports teams, high end businesses, etc. But, it seems when push comes to shove, people don't support such ventures...
